Silly ?? Will I have my cycle if I keep.....

I'm sorry in advance for this silly question.
Here goes....will I still have a period if I keep my ovaries? I know we need a uterus for the egg to attach itself to. Without a uterus....where does the egg go? Ha! Ha! What comes first...the chicken or the egg!

My brain is in constant motion these days. I can't wait to get this over with.

Hi Tamara,

That isn't a silly question!

If your uterus is removed and your retain your ovaries, you will be able to ovulate, but you won't have a period. The eggs are released as before, but it is my understanding from what my doctor told me, that they are just absorbed into the abdomen.

Hang in there!

I learned early on that there is no silly question on this site, so don't be afraid to ask anything.

You will definitely never have another menstrual cycle.....I was not looking forward to having a hysterectomy at 35, but not having a menstrual cycle is truly wonderful!! I am still not accustomed to the idea and I catch myself thinking about when I am supposed to start my period.

The waiting is the worst.....My mind was in complete overdrive for three solid weeks. It will be over and you will be fully recovered before you know it. I thought the waiting would drive me insane and practically made myself sick with worry, so don't do it to yourself......I realize now that there was no need to worry.

I had my surgery on Jan 3 and I am totally back to normal...I now think of my hyst as a little bump in the road and you will feel that, too.

Good luck!

No silly questions here!

I see you are having an LAVH, which means that you are not keeping your cervix. If you *were* to keep your cervix and at least one ovary, you actually could have a "mini period." This doesn't have much to do with the egg....It's that sometimes a little tissue from the uterus (which is not really a separate organ) gets left behind and it responds to the hormones your ovaries produce.

But if you are *sure* that you are not keeping your cervix (and a lot of women aren't actually sure since not all docs take the time to fill them in) you will not have a period.

Not a silly question at all!

I kept my cervix and *still* have no periods (9 weeks post op) but to my dismay I still have a cycle. I've been on birth control for 20 years and have always had sore breasts during that third week on the pill. After having the hyst, I was looking forward to a "booby prize" (so to speak) of no longer having this pain, which I thought was caused by the pill.

However, I've had it twice - every 28 days!! I should just be grateful I don't get PMS!!

Good luck!
Merrie
