What's the size of a "normal" uterus?

I've been reading around, and am confused on the size of a normal uterus. I *thought* it was around 9cm or 10cm? Is this true?

What's the size of a "normal" uterus?

Hi,

I read a book called "Fibroids: The Complete Guide to Taking Charge of Your Physical, Emotional, and Sexual Well-Being' by Johanna Skilling: It says, the average uterus is 2 to 4 inches long, 1.5 to 2.5 inches wide and 1 inch thick; it weighs about one-sixth of a pound or 50 grams ... If you've ever been pregnant, your uterus may be on the larger end of those dimensions.

That's an equivalent of 5.08 X 10.16 cm long and 3.8 X 6.35 cm wide and 2.54 cm thick.

Hope this answers your question.

s,

Lisa

I'm not sure why your uterus would shrink. Most don't, unless you're taking some kind of medication to cause it to do that. Did he maybe mean 16 cm.?

What's the size of a "normal" uterus?

Hi Sashi,
No, I'm not on anything that would make my uterus shrink. Someone told me that it may be folded or tilted back now. I don't know. Maybe it got collapsed, or got stuck together like one sister said. I can't wait till the doc just gets it out!!!

Thanks for the info.

hugs,
Lisa

I asked this ? in post-op a few weeks ago. The response was:

normal uterus weighs about 60 grams, which is about 2.5 oz.

for those of you getting your uterus weight in grams, the conversion is that approx. 450 grams = 1 lb.

Hope that helps.

What's the size of a "normal" uterus?

This site rocks. Up until now the only descriptions of a normal or enlarged uterus I've heard always involved fruit or sporting goods. Maybe it's the classic female/male dichotomy -- for women, be fruitful; for men, the sports analogy always works.

My ob/gyn told me the first time we met that a normal uterus is about the size of a lime. He then went on to say that according to the referral, my uterus was about the size of a grapefruit. Then he did his own ultrasound, got excited, and rather impressively combined analogies by describing my many fibroids as, like, "golfballs," and my uterus as the size of a melon.

"And if they unzipped their belly, put in a melon, and then zipped themselves back up, most people would feel pretty uncomfortable!" Tell me about it.

Hi Ladies,

Interesting post as I've just found out my uterus weighed in at 756g which was surprising as I'd had a D&C 4 months earlier. I had no fibroids, just cysts, polyps and adenomyosis.

think happy thoughts and take care...........Karen
