Question re: fibroid size and hysterectomy

Does anyone know if there's a particular size that fibroids hit that they have to come out?

I'm currently dealing with hyperplasia issues and am hoping to avoid the hysto. On the flip side, I also have at least two fibroids, one being about 10 cm, which I believe is the size of a 12 week pregnancy. Doc had never told me the pregnancy comparison and that kind of freaked me out a bit.

Does anyone know if they hit a particular size if it winds up being something they wind up having to take out?

Question re: fibroid size and hysterectomy

If your fibroids aren't bothering you by causing pressure on other organs or your intestines/bladder, there's really no medical reason to take them out.

It's when they start to cause bladder pressure, intestinal blockages, and crowd into the diaphragm or kidneys that they are considered to jeopardize your overall health. Sometimes they can also increase the surface area or create folds inside the uterus causing heavy bleeding.

Has your doctor discussed myomectomy (surgical removal of the fibroids), hormone therapy, lupron (a chemical inducement of temporary menopause to shrink the fibroids, usually used if you're close to menopause or before other procedures), or UFE.

The good news is that when they're smaller you have more options. I have several friends who have had them removed (one hysteroscopically through the vagina and two who had them removed laproscopically). If it's not causing you any other symptoms besides being apparently large enough to equal a 3 month pregnancy, you've got time to weigh your options. This site is an excellent resource to find out what will work best for you. Take your time and get smart about your own body.

Take care.

Question re: fibroid size and hysterectomy

Thanks for your reply Juniper. I've found myself going to the bathroom more just recently, but I have no other symptoms at the moment. If it gets worse, I'll call the doc, but it could just be a diabetic thing as they've recently changed my meds. This is the main reason I started thinking about it some more.

My gyn discussed myomectomy, which I'm hesitant to do for a variety of reasons. I'm currently going through hormone treatments for hyperplasia, which is why I haven't pursued ablation further. I'm only 35, so I'm not eligible for lupron therapy just yet.

My doc first mentioned myomectomy due to the location of one of the fibroids and needing to remove it sooner than later in case I want to get pregnant.

Question re: fibroid size and hysterectomy

I had a myomectomy in February, I had a large fibroid that gave me lots of problems. I had very heavy bleeding and severe anemia. I am very happy I did it. I am feeling so much stronger and better now. Good luck.
