Has anyone here had a TAH/BSO due to COMPLEX CYSTS?

Hello all~

Many of you know that I have been posting here since 2003 when my sister was DX with OC.

I am now facing a decision for myself to have a prophylactic TAH/BSO, due to my higher risk factor (because my sister has OC), coupled with me having a 3cm COMPLEX cyst on my left ovary and 3 small fibroids on my uterus.
While my doctor appears not to be concerned that I have OC (he said if that were the case he would have put me in the hospital yesterday), I do know that complex cysts are more worriesome than simple cysts (which I have had all of my life) and some times can be cancerous.

My question:

Has anyone here had a TAH/BSO due to, at least in part, to a complex cyst and what were the biopsy outomes?

I would appreciate any information anyone can pass along about complex cysts.

My prayers and blessings to all of you, as always!

Has anyone here had a TAH/BSO due to COMPLEX CYSTS?

Hi Heni!

I had a TAH/BSO due to (quote from my transvaginal ultrasound report) "an enlarged fibroid uterus, the largest fibroid being 6 cm., in addition to a 3x2.8 cm. complex right ovarian mass possibly representing a hemorrhagic cyst." Everthing was benign, according to my pathology report.

Upon hearing that I had an ovarian cyst, I was very terrified. My gyn told me he was not worried that my cyst was OvCa, because of its small size. That consoled me a little.

While OvCa does not run in my family, other cancers do, which is why I opted to have the surgery I did.

Many s and Best Wishes,

My sister had a prohylactic TAH/BSO just a few months ago. She also had a complex cyst on one ovary, and because of my diagnosis of ovca, she decided for the TAH/BSO. All was benign.

She had breast ca back in 1998, so this played a part in her decision too. Then, one month after the hyst she was diagnosed with a reocurrence of breast ca. Not fair ya know?

She is very happy with her decision to have the hyst. I hope you are able to reach a decision that you are comfortable with. Keep us posted.

That's the problem with ovarian cancer. It takes a surgical biopsy to make a definite diagnosis.

I had complex cysts that turned out to be stage IIIC ovarian cancer. My younger sister had a TAH BSO for complex cysts that turned out to be nothing. Thank God!

I see you are still wrestling with the decison. Wishing you well.

karenann how big were your cysts?

how big and how long did they watch them before you had them removed? Did you have a cat scan prior to having surgery?
I don;t want surgery.I am an awful patiebnt and am just now getting over last years hyster......I wonder how they can say lets watch things when they might be cancer.
My mom died of cancer at 54 and my dad at 57.I am so scared.

In '03 my ultrasound showed an 8 cm "complex cyst". Dr. said 6 cm. is the magic number. Anything 6 or more has to come out.He removed it and 2 days later the biopsy came back borderline tumor, he then sent me to GYN-ONC
and he did a TAH-BSO with lymph-node removal and staging. He also did several biopsies, all were negative, thank God.
If I had known then, what I know now, I would have went straight to the GYN-ONC and could have avoided having 2 surgeries, the first one, I went in as a lapo, and ended up with a bikini line cut, and 5 days later with a horrible incision infection, that triggered a whole new set of problems.
Best Wishes to you
Hang in there.

Cysts size

Thats interesting to know.
My ultrasound done 4/18 showed a complex cyst measuring 2.0x2.3x2.0 the second one measures 2.3x0.7x0.9 also a simple cyst that measures 2.1x1.8x2.0 also had mild to moderate free fluid in the pelic cul de sac.
I wil wait and see what size the cat scan says they are today..its been less than 2 weks since the ultrasound. originally GYN wanted me to weait 6 weks to have anotehr yltrasound but since I wa sbeing scanned abdominally anyway for gastro problems I asked primary doc to add pelvis in..
sounds as though my complex cysts are too small to worry about????
