1 1/4 hour drive....any advice for post-op?

My surgery will be done in a hospital located 1 1/4 hours away from home. Are there any tips for after surgery travel?

Thanks in Advance!

I would make sure I took a pain pill right before Ieft castle and have whoever is driving you home to bring a small pillow to put between seatbelt and belly, especially if your having abdominal. Recline the seat back a little if you can and sleep. My drive home was about 45 minutes and it really wasn't bad. My mom brought me home and we talked and it kind of kept my mind off things. Just wished I would've had that pillow.

get one of those micro bead pillows......put it between you and the seat belt....it helps a ton...........tell the driver if he hits any speed bumps you'll kill him (those are sooooo annoying) its really not the driving that will get ya .............its the turns and stops and just getting out of the car was bad...........but dont worry i....i went back to work at 7 weeks (pre-k teacher) and now i'm 6 months post and i feel like a 20 year old again!!!!

great idea's ladies, especailly the "I'll kill you" part, that was hilarious.

I just thought of something.....when my dear Grandma was having trouble getting in & out of the car it was suggested to put a black/green garbage bag on the seat. This worked great for her when she was turning to get in or out.

Thanks again ladies, I won't kill anyone, I promise!

I'm so glad you asked that! My surgery is Monday and is a bit more than an hour away as well.

Thanks for all the tips, everyone.

Good luck, ymotceretsyh.

cpierce is right about the pain killer AND the pillow. I went home one day post op, and did not take a pain killer for the road. I live as far from the hospital as you, and I was in serious pain before I made it home (DH seems to think the road is an obstacle course and hit every pot hole, until I said some really hateful words and he did better!). Just try to relax, listen to the radio if you can't sleep or nap if you can! Good luck!

I took the full dose of my pain killer. I don't even remember the ride home. LOL

I had an hour and a half drive home from the hospital. I took a pain pill as I left and I put the pillow between my seatbelt and my stomach. It wasn't to bad. We even stopped at Sonic for a banana malt.

I got a pain shot of demoral and vistaril. Never felt a bump. And I acutually was awake the whole hour and a half home. Use pillows to support yourself.

I would suggest a small pillow to place under your knees and one long ways for under the back of your calves too. It kind of puts you into a reclining position and the pillow under your knees takes the pressure off your abdomen. It helped me a lot when I had my abdominal surgery several years ago. I live about 45 minutes from the hospital now and plan on using them again this time around.

Best wishes,
Tammy
