I am now 4 1/2 wks post-op and was wondering when and how do you know if your stitches are dissolving? I have had no discharge, bleeding or anything. I do still have alot of pain in my right side, still have a swollen belly and for some reason my right breast is real tender.
I have a check up tomorrow, so I guess I will find out then if everything is going ok. I'm supposed to go back to work on Monday, but don't think that I am ready. Although I work in an office, it's a stressfull job and if don't get my nap in at 12:00, I'm cranky :hair:
I had discharge and aching when my stitches were dissolving. Only part of mine were dissolved at 6 weeks; the rest dissolved between 7 and 8 weeks post op. Not everyone has discharge so when you have your exam the doctor will see what has indeed dissolved by this time.
Shanna - I had twinges and some discharge when my stitches were dissolving. I still had internal stitches when I went for my 4 week post op visit...but they started dissolving at around week 5. Hope you have a good check up.
Hi Shanna - As you can see by your other replies we are all very unique in healing times. I still had a couple slow stitches at 7 weeks. I also had right side pain, that seems to be a very common complaint, occasionally I will still have aches and twinges. I guess this is normal, it takes months to be complete internal healing.
Hope you have a good check up, Marsha
Thank you for your replys. I wonder if my DR. will release me back to work if my stitches haven't begun to dissolve???? Since I haven't seen any sign of it, now I am really dreading that internal tomorrow . Honestly ladies, does it hurt?? I guess it can't be any worse than when I swallowed wrong while in the hospital and started coughing. Felt like I ripped open everything. Oh well, I guess I will just have to wait and see tomorrow. Thanks again.
I had my first internal at 6 weeks and another one at 10 weeks (my stitches were in the slow category). I was greatly relieved that neither internal really hurt. It was more uncomfortable than anything else. It was not painful afterwards and I had no spotting or anything (I have heard that you can have a little bleeding after it). I was nervous, but I'll tell you, there really was nothing to be nervous about.
Best of luck. Maybe you will find out that your stitches are all gone after all !
I never knew a thing. No spotting, no bits of stitches, no particular pains (just the usual pains...), but when I had my 4 week post-op appt they were all gone. So lack of spotting, etc. doesn't necessarily mean they aren't dissolving.
I hope all went well at the doctor's today. I too had a check up, my 5th week. The doctor gave me the okay to resume all activities as I felt I could. (Darn it, no running yet!)
I asked if the internal sutures had dissolved and she sad all seemed okay. I hope that means yes. I never had any physical indication that they were dissolving. As we know, we all heal differently.
The doctor told me that the incision looked "great". Boy, had you asked me, I would have said that it looks pretty crappy. She did say that the "ridge" would take several months to fully heal and should be fairly flat again.
One thing I have learned is to be very patient, even when I didn't think I could.
Peace and Good Healings,

Happy to say that my checkup went great. The internal didn't hurt, my stitches are gone and I can resume all activities in another week.
Said the pain that I am feeling in my right side was normal and that is where most of the "work" was done and the fatigue should slowly go away once I start excersizing and my matobolizm (sp) picks back up. I was so excited about he internal not hurting I forgot to mention the breast tenderness. Oh well if it continues I will give him a call. It's been so long since I've felt like myself, I can't wait to get back on track. Thank you to all for your support and encouraging me to have patience. It really does make a difference.
