Are you not taking any calcium? Most of us have been instructed to take between 1000 and 1500 mg of Calcium (the Citrate form absorbs well) daily, plus half that amount (so 500 to 750mg) of Magnesium.

Linda:

I am taking that range of calcium via Citrical (the plus Vitamin D) caplets to hopefully minimize boneloss while in medically induced menopause. I take vitamin E to hopefully help my skin and hair. I saw your magnesium mention and wonder ... what is the magnesium for? I'll see my doc in a week and wonder if I should ask him about this.

Coffeelover:

I am a bit surprised your doctor has not suggested a calcium supplement. Bone loss is one of the main worries for women and calcium supplementation should probably begin well before menopause unless you are consuming adequate amounts in your diet. I assume since you are on HRT, your are in menopause and in many cases you would be prescribed some sort of calcium supplement. I took 12 tums a day in a medical study while taking Synarel (the first time). This time its Citracal.

Your doctor is the best person to ask about the appropriate supplementation for you. How about giving his/her office a call?

Another idea to help your teeth ... from your name I see that you love coffee..hey me, too. I wonder if you love sodas as well? Sodas are extremely acidic and are highly harmful to teeth. Some juices have the same effect. My kids' dentist recommends for his patients and their families to only consume soda/acidic juices while having meals ... none in between. According to him its the acid in the sodas not the sugar. Diet sodas are just as bad as regular.

This sounds painful and I hope that your doctor and/or dentist can help you find a way to avoid any further tooth issues!

Keep us posted!!!

Here's a link to the Hystersisters article on supplements... it explains really well all the benefits of magnesium:

For many of us, a benefit we can really appreciate is that it counterbalances the constipating effect large amounts of calcium can have on us.

In addition to many other supplements and vitamins, I take a Cal-Mag citrate supplement which contains 500mg calcium and 250mg magnesium per tablet (I take 3 per day). I get it at the health food store.

Also, here's a link to an interesting article about menopause and oral health:

I hope this helps!
