mom's brca test results-NEGATIVE

Hi everyone, well my mom's test came back negative!!! I should be relieved, right? Then why do I still feel so uncomfortable. My moms nurse called and said to tell me my chances of getting ovca are now no greater then the general public. This should make me feel good, right? Well it doesn't. If this isn't genetic then why did my mom and her mom both get this? They say ovarian cancer is so rare so wouldn't that be to coincidental. I feel more confused then ever. I know I should be relieved with the results but...I'm not.

I'm glad your mom's test came back negative, and so sorry for your confusion. I hope someone more knowledgable than I can give you more information..but I think no one really knows why we get cancer
Is it genetic (in your case, no) is it environmental? Is it diet, unhealthy lifestyles, stress? Speaking from a personal viewpoint, the most fit, best-fed people I know have had cancer. The calmest Nun in the world has had cancer. I just don't know WHY...and I dont think anyone else does, either.

At least with your mom's test being negative you know that the scales are NOT unduly tipped in your favor to get Ovca. (If that makes any sense. )

Hugs, please find some peace with this

mom's brca test results-NEGATIVE

I had BRCA testing done after my breast cancer diagnosis in 2003. Mine came back negative as well, despite the fact that just about every female in my family has had breast cancer and/or ovarian cancer. Basically it told me that I didn't have one of the two genes they know can increase risk of breast/ovarian cancer - but it just shows me how much we don't currently know about genetics. the BRCA testing is relatively recent (in the last 5 years, I think) - who knows what we'll know 10 years from now!-

BTW - there's information available/discussions on BRCA testing on www.breastcancer.org web site if you're interested.

Hang in there!

mom's brca test results-NEGATIVE

There is another gene mutation called PTEN that predisposes people to certain cancers.

There are specialists who deal in familial cancers, particularly ovarian. A familial cancer is one where several direct family members or generations have the same disease. The major cancer hospital in Toronto, Ontario does a great deal of research in this area. My family has had studies done at this hospital for another familial disease.

When I developed ovarian cancer, the oncologist I first saw was a leader in familial ovarian cancer research (not because I have family members with OC (lucky me - I'm the first!), but because my type is fairly uncommon, and because my sisters have the same gene mutation). I have also been told that my daughter needs to be monitored as well.

I don't know where you are located, but there is probably a research hospital somewhere near you who has a familial ovarian cancer registry. I have seen one listed in Buffalo, NY, one in Los Angeles and one in Omaha, Nebraska.

Ovarian cancer is by no means rare. It is one of the top female cancers.

I am kind of hesitant to pass along this information as you should always listent to your physician, and I don't pretend to be an expert on this subject; just sharing what I have been told. You sound like you are not entirely satisfied with your doctor's answers, so you may want to get a second opinion.

Sending you lots of postitive thoughts and energy.
