anyone have tips for golytely?
Hi,
Found out I have to do the gallon of golyetly for my bowel prep instead of the phosphsoda like for my colonscopy and am having some concerns! How the heck do you drink 8 oz every10minutes? Just drinking anything that fast I think I would barf. And if you do do you have to start over? And how bad does it really taste? Any ideas on how to do this the easiest way possible would be great!!!!! Thanks, Tiffany

anyone have tips for golytely?
I didn't think the golytley tasted so bad, kinda reminded me of swimming in the Gulf of Mexico when I was a kid and would get a mouthful of water.....salty water. But that's just me.....
Some things that might help is make sure it is really cold and some say using a straw helps it go down faster. I just sipped mine and yes it is hard to drink that much every 10 to 15 min. Also someone suggested to me that if I sucked on a lime before each glass full it helps the taste. I didn't do that but it might help. Oh, and after awhile when DH was refilling my glass for me (um, I was indisposed ) He brought it to me in a stemmed wine glass.
Best Wishes!!

anyone have tips for golytely?
I did not have to drink go-lytely before my hysterectomy, but have had to drink it before most of my colonoscopies. I pour it into the most beautiful glass I own, lite a pretty candle in the bathroom, bring in my boom box and a CD I enjoy, find a book that's hard to put down and get ready for an interesting few hours. I haven't found anything to change the taste. I just get through it. I tell myself, and it's true, that there are many people facing worse than the need to drink a gallon of golytely.

GoLightly
The GoLightly made me vomit on a previous occasion so when my doctor had it down for me I insisted on an alternative.
There are alternatives.
But if you don't ask for one you won't get one.
Start a post asking what bowel preps the women used. Put the post on the post-op side.
Write down all the answers ( and the procedures they were used for). Take that to your doctor. It is a little bit of work but you will save yourself a little bit of nastiness by not having to drink that &*#%.
Good luck.
I had a supracervical abdominal hysterectomy on a monday at 9 a.m. I stopped solid food on Saturday night. Sunday was only clear liquids. I took 2 dulculax Saturday night, 2 before 7 a.m.on Sunday and 2 more before noon.
Mine I know was easy compared to some. I have heard of women taking 20 visichol on a schedule with gingerale that sounded reasonable doable.

anyone have tips for golytely?
I had to do the golityly
I had surgery on a monday,
sunday was clear liquids starting the golityly at noon.
I drank it down fast & cold
Would only fill the glass as much as I could drink in one time, kind of like doing shots.
Once I had things moving everytime I had a break on the toielt I would go to the kitchen and do a couple more shots of the stuff.
Once I started gaging I did a little less, Since I started at noon I did finish the gallon about 8-9 at nite.
Good luck
Dab don't wipe & think of getting "Tucks pads" for dabing.
I did take a bath & kept on jumping out when need

anyone have tips for golytely?
I have asked in the past for alternatives. Some docs, though, prefer the golitely over other methods as they feel it does a better clean-out. I guess if my surgeon preferred one method over another I'd go with what the surgeon prefers as there is a probably/maybe a good reason for it. It HATE golitely, but it does clean me out. I've probably had to drink it five or six times before a colonoscopy. Wish I'd thought of suggesting inquiry re an alternative method. Good luck with whatever route you take.

The Golightley doesn't do a better job of cleaning you out if you are throwing it up.....and doctor's don't want their patients coming in to surgery dehydrated if avoidable.
If this method were the only good one then we would all be drinking it, but if you ask around you will be pleasantly surprised to find there are indeed alternatives...just ask the ladies...go to your doctors with ideas in hand with a big smile and a "please doctor may I...."
Good luck friends,
Judy

Thanks ladies for all your posts!!!!
I did ask for an alternative and he said no, that this was what he wanted because of cleaning out the best he said, but I agree, if you are throwing it up, it doesn't work too well! I am having a bowel resection so don't know if that means anything. The nurse said he doesn't use the golyetly very often, just for "special" cases! Guess that is me.
I did get in trouble for posting in post op once, sorry girls, didn't realize!
The lime idea sounds like it might work. But they said I had to drink the gallon like in 2 hours.
I do agree also there are things that could be much worse.......I shouldn't complain. I don't have cancer or anything life threatening at this point, so I will drink the stuff and smile (well maybe not), but I will be thankful for what I do have.
Thanks again ladies. Tiffany

When I'd have to fix this up for my patients I'd make sure it was very, very cold. Set the container in ice on one side of your kitchen sink and then go for the gusto!!
Good luck!
