As I type this, my mother is in surgery.....
I sure hope this helps......I'm worried sick. My mother is 69. Her hysterectomy is for 1:00 ET. There was what her doctor called a "mass" the size of a grapefruit.
I live in Austin TX, she's in northern Virginia. I'm leaving on Saturday to stay with her for 2 weeks. I'm ready to do whatever it takes. Dad's there to help too. If anyone out there can give me some pointers on what to expect, I would really appreciate it.........
Thank you so much!

txfromva:
I recently had a tumor the size of a grapefruit as well. I had a complete hysterectomy. Everything had to be removed. The tumor was benign. I was told before surgery that it probably would be as when they are that large it usually is benign. Whatever the outcome, I think it will be a comfort to your mother to know that you will be there for her.
What to expect? She will be weepy (maybe not right away), but when the hormonal thing kicks in,expect it. She'll be sore of course, so don't let her lift anything (even vaccuming is too much). Just treat her like a princess and let her spend as much time in bed as possible! Show her this site, it's been a wonderful blessing to me. There is so much support here. Take care and let me know how she does.

Your Mother
Don't worry, she will be fine. I had large fibroids, and am one week past surgery. She will be sore, and pretty uncomfortable. Pamper her, and do what ever the Doc tells her to. My biggest suggestion is to make her REST! Being a Mom, we are always used to being the caretakers...it is time for you and Dad to completely pamper her! Rent lots of movies she loves, feed her small, loving, feasts when she is hungry....and don't let her overdo it! (I overdid it and now regret still tying to be super mom) SO even in 3-4 days when she starts feeling a little fiesty....put her back to bed!

txfromva, Prayers are being sent that way. You will know what to do when you get there. She will have instructions from the doctor, she will let you know what she feels like eatting, make sure she rest, rest, rest. Just make sure she follows orders.
Make sure she has great pillows! That has been an important part of the healing process. The perfect tummy pillow for me came from my DH. He found a big white rabbit at the Hallmark shop, it has been a life saver for me. It works great for a knee prop. It helped with coughing, You just have to have the right size etc.
God bless you,
Queena
