Is a 'pseudomucinous cystadenoma' a dermoid cyst?
Hi,
I posted earlier this week (Just Diagnosed - Please Help) and now have my radiology reports from the ultrasound and CAT scan. Can't see my Dr. for a week to ask, so...do any of you know the answer: is a 'pseudomucinous cystadenoma' a dermoid cyst? My Dr. and the tech doing the scan indicated 'dermoid', just want to be sure the technical and layman's terms mean the same thing. Little luck in internet searches for the medical term.
Cyst is 10 x 13 cm. and 'mostly fluid filled.' I am completely asymptomatic except for the obvious protrusion of my belly. CA-125 test was normal (12). Dr. is pushing for TAH, I'm resisting and seeking second and third opinions. I believe this is his approach because of his own limitations as a surgeon - he does not want to do a laparoscopic hyst procedure or drain the cyst.
Anyone else been there, done this?
Thanks,
Jordan L

Regarding your cyst. Size is aprox. 4" X 5".
demoid cyst: a non malignant cystic tumor in which are found elements derived form the ectoderm, such as hair, teeth, or skin.
adeno: prefix denoting a gland
adenocyst: a cystic tumor arising from a gland
adenocystoma: a cystic adenoma
cystadenoma: An adenoma containing cysts. Cystoma blended with adenoma.
mucinous tumors: tend to be the largest of all the tumors the larger the tumor the more likely to be mucinous. Majority are benign. Generally asymtomatic. No clue what psudomucinous means. That would be a good question for whoever wrote the report. You might try calling that person directly.
Ultrasound is supposed to be very reliable in diagnosing the dermoid cysts.
***information from a med dictionary and GYN textbook.
If you are not interested in an unnecessary hysterectomy you might request that your surgery be staged. Removed cyst, if unable to remove without removing affected ovary, than cyst and overy. If non-malignant- close me up. If malignant than agree to hysterectomy. If doctor thinks this cyst is likely to be malignant than there are many who feel that you should be refered to a gyn-onc. If the doctor does not think the cyst is malignant-what is the chance of reoccurance? If you are back to square one with the same odds of any lady out there on the street-why recommendation for TAH/BSO?
Good luck obtaining answers in what must be a very stressful period of time for you.

Is a 'pseudomucinous cystadenoma' a dermoid cyst?
Thanks for the info, Pearle.
Turns out my Dr. changed his mind again...the mucinous cyst is not considered a 'dermoid cyst,' he decided after reviewing radiology reports. This is the same Dr. who originally told me with certainty I had a fibroid after the physical exam, same Dr. who failed to diagnose mass for two years. I'm getting a new Dr.
Thanks too for info about 'staged' surgery. I am going to insist on the appropriate paperwork.

Sounds like a good idea! Even if you don't think you have any problems with your doctor, at least two opinions is a good idea. In my case it may have saved me from any surgery. In your case it sounds like you need to determine what is the appropriate surgery and who should do.
Best wishes and do let us know what you learn.
