Ovary removal and PCOS

I wanted to first say hello to everyone and let you know how happy I am you are all here. I have been dealing with endometriosis and polycystic ovarian syndrome(PCOS) for quite some time. I'm not sure how long because for years nobody would listen. I started my period at 81/2 and at 13 I was put on birth control due to awfull periods. I will be 36 next week and after so many doctors I finally found one to hear me last year. I bleed for months at a time and that's on continous birth control. He did a laperoscopy and found endometriosis, fibroids and a polyp. He found out that my uterus is densley adhered to my rectal wall but couldn't do anything because I wasn't bowel prepped. I don't think he believed how bad things were until he did the surgery. Well the surgery was Oct 12, 2004 and I never felt better. I am now bleeding for 7 weeks straight and counting. I also went to a new gyn bcuz the other one told me to go get pregnant (imagine). I had an MRI and I have 2 new fibroids and a polyp. The doctor agreed I need a hysterectomy. I'm thinking because of the PCOS I should have both ovaries removed. I guess I want some opinions on removing both. I've suffered for so long that I am so afraid of not removing them. Please tell me what you think. I'm sorry this is so long but nobody else understands what I am dealing with. I don't have any children so when I tell people what I will have they say are crazy. They don't get that my chances of ever getting pregnant are zero. I do not ovulate and have endo so bad I will never be able to. Not to mention I am so single at the moment and I am not even sure I want kids. I'm sure I will find support here and thank you in advance.

Ovary removal and PCOS

Boopa, I'm so sorry you've been through so much! I also have PCOS and am scheduled to have uterus, fallopian tubes and both ovaries removed on 16 May. But, mine is due to endometrial cancer, which I understand your risk for goes up due to PCOS. My dr. said with PCOS the ovaries produce too much estrogen, which cancer loves, so my ovaries should come out. Have you heard anything about how removing the ovaries affects the PCOS symptoms? It's on my list of questions to ask my dr., but I haven't asked yet.

I am so sorry you are going through all of this. I will keep in you my thoughts and would love to hear from you after your surgery. I am wondering the same thing. When I asked my Dr. about my ovaries and PCOS he said it would be best to remove them. At that moment he got a call to deliver a baby so we were cut short. If you get an answer please let me know. My surgery isn't until June 21st so I will be here hoping everything goes great for you!!!!

Ovary removal and PCOS

I am glad you found this place. It has been such a help for me as well. I am sure you really will find as much support as you need.

I have endo and pcos too. I have been dealing with this for half my life. I am scheduled for May 12th to have a TAH BSO and Appy. My doctor said the only reason for me to consider leaving my ovaries in, would be if they were healthy. And with the pcos, they are definitely not healthy. She said they would never get better, so it is better for me to go ahead and take them out.

I will be 30 in August, no kids. If I didn't have the endo and pcos I probably could have pushed to just have my cervix removed to get rid of the cancer and 'preserve fertility'. But you and I both know there is no fertility to bother trying to preserve.

I encourage you to do what will ensure you the best quality of life.

Best wishes!
B

PS: I also had one insensitive doctor tell me to get pregnant, but I was single and 19 at the time! I cried for weeks.

Thank you all for your replies. I kind of thought I would take them out just to make sure everything was taken care of. It's just been so long that I felt good I don't want to take any chances. I want to be happy and healthy.....Thanks again...
