Should I get bladder sling removed?
I just read through some archives and I dont know which type of sling I have, all I know is that there was no stitching it in to me, its a free standing mesh sling.
Now, with that said, I have had nothing but major trouble since my LAVH last August. At the time, I was diagnosed with a prolapsed uterus. I also had a mild case of stress incontinence. The urologist suggested the sling and even though I thought it wasnt totally necessary, I liked the idea I could jog without wetting my pants, esp. at age 32.
The hysterectomy was fine, however the sling has been giving me trouble. At first it was just that I was getting up to go to the bathroom every hour for a few months so I was put on Ditropan which didnt help a whole lot.
Then I began getting horrible bladder infections. Once I was peeing chunks of blood, I had a fever and couldnt even stand. Another time it was almost a kidney infection. Another time I was sick to my stomach. In total since my surgery last August, I have had about six bladder infections and just as many yeast infecions.
The drs. office is TERRIBLE. They have messed up on my appointments, on my referrals for testing, called to cancel my appointment, change the time etc. They did not get a referral for my cystoscopy. They dont call me back. I was told I couldnt schedule an appointment with the dr to find out the results from the urodynamic test. Its been a nightmare all the way around. The drs. office is the only game in town. NO other urologists here. After hearing about a woman with similar problems from the same dr doing the mesh sling, I decided to see another urologist in the group.
At this point, I think I want the sling out. I wish I just waited to see if the removal of my uterus helped the bladder pressure. Now I have that stupid sling in and I want it OUT. Im tired of infections and having to pee even more frequently than before. My theory is that my bladder doesnt empty because of the sling so I always need to go a few times to fully void. And then with the excess urine, bacteria grows and it becomes an infection. That is just my opinion.
What would you all do? And what is involved with taking the sling out? Is it done under general anesthesia? An overnight hospital stay? Catheter?
Did I mention this is a NIGHTMARE?

Should I get bladder sling removed?
From my understanding, removal of a urethral sling is a fairly involved surgery. The reason is because tissue grows around the sling making the sling become one with the patient. To remove it requires tissue removal (whats grown around the sling) thus possibly causing more trouble that what youre dealing with at present time.
There is a less involved procedure (again, from my understanding) that allows the Dr to loosen the tension of the sling which in turn allows the patient to void more freely (emptying the bladder completely).
For starters you really need to find out exactly whats causing your frequent urination and infections, then go from there. The two problems may not be related, but just coincidence.
It sounds like your first priority, though, is to find a reputable urologist.
stay well

Should I get bladder sling removed?
So sorry to hear you are having problems.
It is fairly common, especially in the case of prolapse, for incontinence to become worse after a hysterectomy. So in most cases addressing both issues at the same time is probably a good thing.
The previous post-er is correct that sling removal can be difficult, and for the reasons she listed. However, it can be done if your situation warrants it.
I have a really short fuse with doctors' offices that don't run smoothly. I hope you can find someone competent to evaluate your situation and give you some answers and recommendations.
My heart goes out to you. These problems can be so frustrating.
