38 hours post op - BSO with laparoscopic exploratory

Hi, I'm new on this board. I found you guys while looking for information about ovarian tumors. What a wonderful place this is! It's great to be with others who can relate to all of this.

I had a LAVH in 1998 because of multiple large fibroids, endrometriosis, adenomyosis and hemorrhaging. The hysterectomy was actually the best thing that could have happened. I love not having to deal with periods, especially after months of bleeding heavily and being in pain all of the time. They left my tubes and ovaries, assuring me they would 'see me through' until menopause. I was on hormone therapy within 6 months of surgery. I had terrible hot flashes, insomnia, the whole surgical menopause bit. Thankfully, the Climara patch I use seems to take care of that.

Last December during my annual gyn. appointment I mentioned pain in my lower right side. I had a sonogram and we could see a small ovarian cyst. Each month I went back to my doctor and had another sonogram and each month the cyst grew larger. During this time I had two CA-125 tests, which came out normal. As the cyst grew it began developing a lot of smaller cysts on it. A few weeks ago my doctor told me I needed to have the tumor (as he now calls it) removed, along with ovaries and tubes. Since my ovaries are not working anyway I had no problem with this. Also had been in pain for weeks and it was getting worse each day. Didn't know why until after the surgery. The tumor was quite large and twisted on it's stem. My doctor said it looked completely benign but of course it's being tested. Does anyone know how long this usually takes? I thought they checked for malignancy right there in the operating room.

So here I am - 38 hours post op. from a bilateral salpingoophorectomy with laparoscopic exploratory and eating pain pills like they were M & M's. Sure wish they would have taken my ovaries when I had the hysterectomy. If I had it to do over again I would tell them to take it all while they are in there. I could have easily avoided all of this.

Thanks for letting me get this out. It's been an emotional few days.

I'm sorry you have to go through this. I know first-hand how hard it is to wait for biopsy results. My hyst biopsy was the shortest waiting period of all my biopsies. My surgery was on a Tuesday and my DR called with results on Friday of the same week. Other times I had to wait much longer. I'll be praying that you get *great* news very quickly, and I hope you feel better soon!

s lyna and to Hystersister!

We are so glad you found us lyna and I'm really sorry that you have had to go thru a second surgery.

You're story almost sounds like mine. I had a TAH back in 2001 and in the summer of 2004 I was in the OR to remove a 12 cm mass on my right ovary.

Unfortunately my mass was malignant and they were able to tell me and my family that right after surgery. So, I think it is a very good sign that they were not able to determine that for you during the course of surgery. Normal wait time on pathology is around 10 days.

How I so know the feeling of "why didn't I have them take my ovaries, when I had my hyst" ? But, I am thinking very positive thoughts for you.

Please let us know when you're results are back. Or, if you just need to vent, we are here for you 24/7.

pathology time

Hi- I had my surgery on a Wednesday and had preliminary pathology results immediately upon waking. I was discharged on Sunday, and at that time was informed of the final pathology result, which indicated a totally benign complex serous/ mucinous cystadenoma. I think they were pretty thorough and it took 4-5 days.

Hi Lyna... I have a similar story and almost to the T . I had hysterecomy left overies in June 04. I started having problems within months with my overies and pain on my right side. I had 2 ultrasounds and had a double in size on cysts within a month. The overies had to go. I had surgery last monday to remove overies and had it all done with the scope. My surgery took longer then expected. My overies were full of cysts and my rectosigmoid colon had stretched up to my pelvic wall and was covering my overies on both sides with adhesions. It was really bad I guess from what my doctor said. He told my husband he was not expecting it to look that bad prior to getting in there. I hope you follow through with your surgery hun.. it is the best thing I have done to say the least. I already feel better and dont feel that crap inside anymore. If I wasnt still sore from the surgery I would feel like a million bucks.

I know my story might not match yours to the T.. but Im am very confident that you will feel much better phisically, and not to mention Mentally once you get it over with. I am taking hormones and had a few headaches after surgery but it was solved by changing the time of day I took my pill. I have had some hot flashes which suck, but overall feel confident TOTALLY, that I made the right decision. Im sure youll feel the same... I hope this helped you and if you need to talk at all please feel free to PM' me and I WILL write you back... good luck

Lyna,
I too am recovering from a second surgery. I had my TAH in 4/02. My doctor left my ovaries in because at that time they were healthy and I was only 28. I had one year pain free. I started having pain on my left side and it also became unbearable. At my yearly in March, my doc felt a mass on my left ovary. An ultrasound showed a cyst. When they went to remove my ovaries (May 3rd, 2005)he found that the omentum( a lining over your abdominal organs) had grown down and over all of my pelvic region. I also had severe adhesions from my endo. My ovaries were stuck to everything. I have to say this surgery has been so much harder to come back from than my hyst. I had my pathology before I left the hospital, so good luck with your results. My doc also started my on the Vivelle patch as soon as I got home. It has helped some, but boy do the tears flow these days! Good luck and a speedy recovery to you!
