Provera Anyone?????

I was on it for about 3- 4 days..............can't remember it was before my TVH.I had bad reactions to it though.I experienced calf/leg cramps, headaches,SEVERE cramping. The calf/leg pains are a warning sign, so my Gyn took me off of it.I had one of the WORST periods of my life after that.
Good luck and I pray you have better luck with it and that your recovery goes smoothly

Provera Anyone?????

Hi-
I also had the same experience as Tammarree....severe cramping and bleeding that wouldn't stop. I honestly can say that while on Provera, I was miserable. That was just my experience, yours may be different.

I wish you all the best

Provera Anyone?????

I was on provera for over nine months, 10 mg a day for 10 days straight. My appetite and weight increased over these nine months. The provera did effectively get rid of my endometrial hyperplasia w/atypia, but my cycles were truly awful. They had always been heavy and long (seven to ten days), but with the provera I bled so much each month that I thought I was hemorrahging (spelling?). Nasty drug that I hope to NEVER take again...

Provera Anyone?????

I also was diagnosed with endo and was treated with Progesterone prior to surgery. I received it in a different form though. First they gave me the Depo Provera shot which is thought to stay in your system for a year. I experienced sudden mood swings and hot flashes. I was unaware I would suffer from menopausal symptoms when they gave it to me. It made me bleed for a month straight, which had never happened to me before. During my surgery it was found that very little endo was visible and I also had a fibroid that was bleeding. So I think it made the endo better but the fibroid problem worse. Following surgery I was put on Aygestin (pill form of Progesterone), to kill off any remaining endo. I suffered most of the menopausal symptoms but it seemed to make it all bearable. I had to wait 6 months for estrogen. Am now on the Vivelle patch and feeling more human at last.

I can't say that I enjoyed the progesterone but it did work on the endo. It was the adhesions and damage from the endo that led me to a TAH/BSO. I would try anything other than loose my ovaries as surgical menopause is no fun. You are so young also, so do your research and make a decision that is right for you. It wouldn't hurt to try it, we all react differently to meds.

Provera Anyone?????

My mother stayed on provera until her menopause and swears by it. I on the other hand tried it for one month and saw no difference in my period and had the added benefit of depression so I said no more.
I don't know if my peroid would have been better if I had stayed on it longer but the depression was not pleasant and I didn't want to risk getting more depressed.

Provera Anyone?????

I took Provera 10 mg/ day for ten days each month to resolve constant bleeding and simple hyperplasia. It worked at first to ward off the bleeding, but then after a second D&C, I switched to Prometrium(bioidentical progesterone) 100mg/day for 10 days. Both worked to resolve the hyperplasia, but neither could control the bleedng for very long.

I did not experience any adverse side-effects from either one. I did gain about 5 pounds while on it, but then again, my activity level was down due to fatigue and flooding. I slept better while I was on each of them. I was glad I took them because they bought me the time I needed to make my decision to have surgery.

The reason I asked to switch to the Prometrium was because I had read that it does not lower the HDL (good cholesterol) levels and Provera can. That was an important issue to me as my HDL's are too high as it is.

Good luck, I hope it helps you!

Provera Anyone?????

Since you had endo and you still have your ovaries, your doctor is probably concerned that more endo may cause you more adhesions and pain involving your ovaries. Since estrogen can enhance the growth of the endo, I am thinking he has prescribed the Provera (progesterone) to balance the estrogen and prevent accelerating the endo growth. (My GYN said to think of Progesterone as the "anti-estrogen".)

The reason I took the Provera was because my GYN felt my endometrial hyperplasia was due to an imbalance in my own levels of estrogen and progesterone, leading to estrogen dominance. Estrogen works to build the endometrial tissue (like endo, adeno and the normal endometrial lining of the uterus). The progesterone counteracts that growth and stabilizes the tissue. By having estrogen dominance, my endometrial lining became to thick and the cellular growth became over-crowded (hyperplasia). When too much built up, the irregular spotting or flooding would occur. By giving me the Provera, it helped to stop the overgrowth and maintain the lining until I stopped taking it and then I would have a normal period. That only worked a short time for me, though. I hope this explanation makes sense.

I am concerned about these pains you are having since starting the Provera. If you are having chest pain of any kind you should contact your doctor immediately!
