breasts engorged and leaking--okay??

I had a TAH on May 19th, so its been exactly 7 days today. I am recovering okay, able to get up and down alone, walk pretty far, and having no bleeding, but my breasts are engorged, tender, and leaking small amounts of colostrum pretty regularly for the past 4 days. My tummy is tender and swollen but I expected that. My dr. said she had never heard of this, but said it's nothing to worry about. Has anyone else experienced this? Am I okay??

Hi jasmineT;

I don't know much about what you are experiencing but I have seen women on here that say they have "leaking breasts".

Also, tender ... I *think* it is something to do with your hormones going whack-o.

I wanted to reply and let you know you are "normal".

I hope by bumping your post back to the top, someone who experienced this will reply!

Take care!

Hoping you might get some more responses...are you on HRT? Maybe the ladies in the Hormone Jungle forum might have some ideas. Good Luck!

no hormones- breasts leaking!!

In answer to your question, I am not on HRT, and actually both ovaries were left behind. The right ovary had some endometrial implants, but these were removed, leaving the ovary intact.
Thanks for the advice. Lisa-TAH-5/19-04

I have fibrocystic brease disease and my nipples leak sometimes. This is not really a "disease" and is very common. I've read article saying that 60% of all women will have this at one time or another. It is believed to be tied to your ovarian hormone production, so many women have problems with it after surgery when your hormones are trying to get adjusted. Caffeine tends to make it worse. Below is a paragraph I picked up from the web.

Cystic disease, or fibrocystic disease.
This is where some of the little milk secreting glands or small ducts blow up like a bubble [a cyst] filled with watery or milky fluid. Probably their drainage outlet gets blocked. The cysts are sometimes surrounded by tough, scar-like fibrous tissue instead of soft fat. The condition can cause your breast to feel lumpy in places, and if the cysts are full and tense or if there is much fibrous scarring, it may feel very firm, a bit like cancer. But it is completely benign.

I have not yet had my hyster but I have this same leaking problem.

I have had it with PMS for the last 5 years. Doctor checked out my pituitary hormone level of prolactin and I'm fine. You can look up galactorrhea and maybe find more info on this problem.

I agree with the other posters that this is probably just a post-op hormone fluctuation thing. Hope you feel better soon!
