I am 10 days postop and I have bladder stage fright!
Hi all, hope you are doing well in your recoveries. I have an "urgent" question. Here is my concern: I had a TVH and sphincterotomy on May 17th. Since the removal of the catheter in the hospital I have not had the "urge" to urinate as I once did, in fact the nurse in the hospital noticed and had to straight cath me since I was not completely emptying my bladder. I actually stayed an extra day in the hospital. Next, I called the doc this week about it since it has not improved since I have been home. I can "make" myself go, but the urge is not there as I once had, and I know it's not enough either because only some of it comes out. So, went to see the gyn and he said I peed 40 in a cup and they straight cathed me and pulled out 60. He put me on macrobid to prevent an in infection in the bladder and then explained the uterus and the bladder were together and the bladder had to be "handled and the uterus was attached to it" during surgery. He explained it is possible there may be damage to the bladder or it may be in shock, but he didn't think so since I can at least go a litttle and he didn't feel the residual was a lot. Anyway, things have not improved; I just don't feel the need to go. I go in and sit on the toilet and wait, then like I said only small amounts come out. This is scaring me a bit. On top of everything else my rectum is spotting red blood and has been all week. I spoke to the gen surgeon that did that procedure and he said it should be healed by now. WOO, it is not, in fact I can feel the sutures coming from my rectum and it HURTS because they poke the skin. I called his office again and they still have not called back!
Anyone have any thoughts for me? I feel a bit overwhelmed by all this and am wondering what I have done. FYI, the reason for my hyster surgery was b/c my uterus/cervix was literally falling out and I had to keep shoving it back inside. (Prolapse). I birthed six children in 18 years. Doc says I can't lift anything for fear of "other prolapses" What else can prolapse? I lost my uterus and cervix, what else can come tumbling down? Thanks in advance for listening.

I don't have any answers, but here's a friendly to get you to the top of the display now that others are likely to see it and respond.
I'm so sorry you're having such a tough time.

This has to be hard for you; especially waiting for you DR to call back. It's obvious something is not right and the stitches poking into you...ouch! (My DR recently trimmed mine at the Vaginal Cuff site and I know that poking stitches hurt). I hope your DR calls back soon. If it were me...I'd call again until I got a response. Good luck and let us know what happens. Diane

I am 10 days postop and I have bladder stage fright!
We recently had a thread on the lack of urination sensation that some sisters had after their hyst.
http://www.hystersisters.com/vb2/sho...hreadid=204505
I realized a couple of days after being home that I can't tell if I need to go and can only assume when I stop that my bladder is empty. The only time that I have felt anything is one night when I woke up because my urethra was burning. I was very full. Its a little unnerving and I had thought it was getting better, but one month post-op and there has really been no change. I just make sure that I go every few hours.

thanks for the info. it is not getting any better, and i do worry about possible damage to the bladder. hopefully, it is only because of the swelling due to surgery and will calm down as time goes by. patience. that is my new word for this experience. thanks!

I had the exact same problem after surgery. In fact I went home with a foley. Anyway long story short my dr sent me to a urologist and 5 days later my foley was taken out they filled my bladder up had me urinate then they did a bladder scan. Had the same problem years ago when I had my appendectomy. I think some people just have this p roblem due to the anaestsia. I think your doing the right thing. Keep bugging your Dr. Its a shame you have to be so persistant. He should be concerned.

Sounds like you are worried. I had to wear a cath home from the hospital which I was not very happy about. But, I know I would have had a lot of problems going on my own. I, also, had my hysterectomy because of prolapses. My uterus was prolapsed and my bladder was bulging out of me. So, I do understand some of what you have been through.
My gyn. told me when my cath came out to be sure to go potty every 1/2 hour during the day because it might take a while for the sensation to come back. It didn't take me very long to get it back. I am over 9 weeks post op and I still have to be patient in the bathroom. I tilt myself every which way to make sure my bladder is emptying. I used to have to do that when it was prolapsed.
It makes me that your doctor isn't listening. You probably should have worn the cath home from the hospital. (I know that stinks.) Especially since you were having problems in the hosptial.
I would just keep calling them. Remember the squeaky wheel is the one who gets the oil.
