transvaginal ultrasound scan ? :uk:

Hello from England ,I saw my consultant on the 11th about a poss hysterectomy due to prolapse of the cervix ,and very heavy ,painful bleeding .
He has recomended a T.V.S to see if there is any reason for my heavy bleeding .He did explain the what this entails................however because I seem to have a memory shorter than a goldfish.( I have either forgotten or my brain is so horrified at the thought of a T.V.S it has driven the information from my train of thought.)
Can anyone tell me what a T.V.S is ?
Also any other ideas re what other tests I should be having ?

transvaginal ultrasound scan ? :uk:

Hi I had regular pelvic and TV ultra sound tests. The TV was actually easier because I did not need to have a very full bladder like you need for the pelvic (scan of the tummy like they do for pregnency).

It is simple and painless - they just put a thin ultrasound wand in your vagina, move it around for a couple of minutes to get multiple views and read the pictures on a screen. The tech told me that it can be a little messy if you are having heavy bleeding - but they have seen it all many times before. Really no big deal all all.

I do think the thought of the T.V.S. is worse than the actual test.

When I had mine done the ultrasound lady (what are they called) let me put the scope in. I felt in control of the procedure then.

Good Luck!

The waiting and wondering are by far the worst of the test. You do need a very full bladder for the regular ultrasound. Then you get to empty your bladder and the transvaginal ultrasound is not painful or embarassing.

They have seen it all. I was in the middle of a very heavy bleed when I had mine done. They put down an absorbant pad and have you insert the wand. She then moves it very slightly, I hardly felt it move. She won't give you any info on what she finds. My ultrasound was done in the clinic where my Dr. is. After the test I went to see him and he showed me the films and explained what was found.

I then was sent to see a surgeon who did a biopsy in his office. This wasn't bad either. He did give me some good pain pills. I had been complaining of severe cramps and he found out why. I was dilated!!! The clots were so big that I had to dilate to pass them!!!

Biopsy came back ok.

Fibroids were so many and a few quite large that I was scheduled for a hyst 10 days later.

Best thing to ever happen to me!!! Feel like a million bucks. Still am anemic from all the blood loss. Doc say this will clear up in a month or two. Having blood count done again next week.

Please don't stress the test. I made myself sick over it. I only had to worry overnight, but that was enough. You really will be ok. They do this all the time. My mother told me that I was not the first, nor would I be the last. Small words, but it did make me feel better.

Good luck to you.

Best wishes from Alaska!!!!

transvaginal ultrasound scan ? :uk:

Hi Britannia - I just wanted to share with you - I have had 5 transvaginal ultrasounds and they are really easy. All the techs I had were female which really helped. In fact I just had one done last Wednesday and the tech was super nice. She told me to empty my bladded first, undress from the waist down and put a gown on. In the room I got up on the table - sometimes there are stirrups and sometimes there are not. This time there wasn't she just had a cushion on the table and told me to put my butt on top of it. The room was really dark. She put a condom and KY on the wand and then handed it to me to insert. I had to have the thickness of the lining checked because I have had hyperplasia and amazingly she told me right away that everything looked great and even showed me on the screen (that is unusual). The whole thing was over in about 5 minutes.

In fact my doctor called me yesterday to confirm that everything was fine and just to have another scan in 3 months.

You will be fine. The techs do this all the time and think nothing of it. They look at the monitor and never even see you.

Hope you get good results. Let us know how it goes.
