Anyone have fluid under their insicion?

I am 5 weeks post op. I had an ultrasound yesterday morning that showed fluid under the insicion. They had me come in and drained it. They got quite a bit of fluid out. Has anyone else had this? I have had several other surgeries and never had this problem, I was just curious how normal it is.

Seroma?

Hi Jessica,

I had fluid build up under my incision and it actually caused my incision to open and it litterally burst out with the fluid, looked like I was peeing from the opening in my belly incision. Im 3 1/2 weeks out from surgery TAH/BSO and my incision is still draining this fluid. Its called a Seroma and can happen sometimes with abdominal surgery. Just make sure you keep an eye on it, my belly swells really large around my incision and I know to get ready for it to drain again. I know it makes your whole belly sore and hurt when it gets full of this fluid. If you are draining the fluid make sure you watch for any odor to it or any redness and warmth to your belly, that could mean an infection. The fluid is normally yellowish with some pink.
Im told that it will resolve over time but that it could take months for it to do so. Doctor told me it is from the trauma to the tissue from the surgery and it could happen up to a year or so after surgery.
Make sure and call your doctor if you notice your belly swelling or becoming more tender, you may need it drained again. Also if you develop a fever let him know.
I dont mean to frighten you, i know all this sounds scarey and awful but as long as you dont get an infection the doctor said its not a life threatening thing.
I hope this helps.

Anyone have fluid under their insicion?

Hello Everyone,
When I went into my Dr last Tuesday to get my staples taken out I also asked about what looked like abnormal swelling immediatly around my incision. She did say that that is normal with abdominal surgury and that also the several Heparin injections (used to cmbat blood clots and extremly painful) that I had been given in the hospital also cause fluid build up and retention around the insision and and in the belly. She said that my body should absorb any fluid caused from that medication with in 3-4 weeks.

Best of Luck
Robbie
