A Headache in the Pelvis

Good evening ladies, I hope this finds you doing well, or as well as can be expected. I don't want to gloat, but after 3 weeks of pelvic floor physical therapy and trigger point injections, I am experiencing a tremendous change in the tension of that muscle and I'm even beginning to have some good days. I AM SO THANKFUL TO GOD, I know many :ers have been sent and I believe I'm experiencing the answer to them. After 4 long years, this is just amazing and I am so excited! I can't let myself get too excited because I still have a long way to go, and the pain is not yet completely gone. And of course I'm left with the issue of getting off of my pain meds. One thing at a time. I'm at step 23 and that is step 1,023!

Anyway, my physical therapist recommended a book to me that is basically about my diagnosis of pelvic floor spasm. Although I haven't read much of the book yet, my therapist shared something with me today that I felt I just must share with you. Its a story. If I go to long I'll post another thread to get it all in. So here goes...

A Headache in the Pelvis: A new understanding and treatment for prostatitis and chronic pelvic pain syndromes David Wise, Ph.D. and Rodney Anderson, M.D.

"This is the book to read before you contemplate surgery, drugs or resign yourself to continue to suffer with chronic pelvic pain. Return to health IS POSSIBLE."

An Allegory (p. 90+)

Once upon a time, there was a land called the pelvic floor upon which the whole world depended for its survival and pleasure. The pelvic floor provided vital services for the world including filtering and eliminating wastes, providing sexual pleasure, and helping structurally support the world in its various activities. The land of the pelvic floor performed these services best went its citizens lived a life of balance between work and rest....

More from the book

I guess I thought I added another excerpt from the book last night, but apparently I didn't, or it didn't save right. All the better anyway. I just wanted to add a bit more regarding an analogy of how the doctor and patient react to the pain. I thought I had only added the doctor's side and not the patient's, but apparently I didn't so now I can include both of these. I know I can relate to this as a patient, as I'm sure many of you can too. I share this because I find it so validating to have something to relate to so I hope I can offer the same to someone else. I haven't read very far into this book yet, but I'll tell you, it really is making sense and validating everything I've ever felt or thought about the pain.

Here's the excerpt about how the doctor treats the pain and how the patient reacts to it...

(p 62-63)

In treating your painful pelvic floor from the current body-as-a-machine perspective, it is as if the doctor were saying to your pelvic floor:

“You must have been invaded by bacteria or are inflamed for some reason. I am going to use drugs to get rid of this bacteria or inflammation. Your pain is something that shouldn’t be there. It is not informative. It shouldn’t be considered or listened to. It is not saying anything. Your pain and dysfunction has no relation to how your owner is thinking, feeling, working, being in relationship, or generally living his or her life and I have neither the time for nor the interest in how you might be part of the larger picture of your owner’s life. Considering the larger picture of your owner’s life and how that might help you is a foreign idea to me. I am simply interested in silencing you. If I do that, I have been successful in my work.”....

If the pelvic floor is your trouble, I highly recommend this book to help you learn more about what is going on in there. One of the authors suffered from pelvic pain for 22 years... I just can't even imagine.

All my love Sisters!

A Headache in the Pelvis

Please take the time to read this. As I progress in this book I am further validated and know I'm in the right place. After 4 years of searching that is a blessed relief. I sort of feel bad however because it seems I was predisposed to this problem and I didn't do anything to keep it from happening. In reality, I put myself in the perfect situation to cause the pain. Too sad. All I can do now tho is just try to make long-term changes in my life that will enable me to reduce the pain and keep it from coming back. I totally feel that Pelvic Floor Physical Therapy is a God-send!

If you are still searching for answers, please look into this!

Wishing us all an eventual healing!
