Ovarian mass--please help
I had an u/s show a complex mass with cystic components with mural nodules. My gyn won't know what type of mass this is until they remove the mass. From my description has anyone have a benign cyst or was yours found to be cancerous? Should I get a referral for a gyn/oncologist or proceed with surgery?
Thanks

Absolutely, you must have a gyn/onc perform your surgery! Even if you have to wait a couple of weeks, it is well worth it.
These dr.'s are the experts in this field and should be used even if cancer is even remotely suspected. When is your surgery scheduled? Have you had a CA125 done yet?
You will probably have alot of questions prior to surgery. Please feel to post all of your concerns here. We are here for you 24/7 and we'll leave the on.

I did have a CA-125 done. I didn't ask the number but was told it was in the normal range. Surgery is set to be scheduled but not confirmed.
thank you for your reply.

Well, I had a normal CA125 and I had a form of cancer in the complex cyst in my ovary. It was a rare kind of cancer, but nonetheless, there it was--and luckily borderline. I was very glad to have a gyne/onc do the surgery--for one reason, they are just better surgeons! So even if the cyst is benign, the surgery itself is more likely to go well. It was particularly helpful since it wasn't run of the mill cancer. His years of expertise helped.
So, yeah, I agree that it's worth checking out.

Gyn/Onc
You should have a gyn/onc if there is any chance of cancer. Also, about 20% of women find the CA125 does not indicate cancer for them.

Not all ovarian cysts, complex included, are cancerous. While if there is a chance that it is cancerous, I agree that a gyn/onc is the best way to go for the surgery, have you gone to the gyn/onc for a 2nd opinion?
Lots of the woman on this board use the expression, "don't waste a good panic"....gather all the facts you can prior to surgery, ask questions and don't be afraid to get 2nd opinions.
I had a "mass" removed from my right ovary in 2000 that was cancerous, contained, but cancer just the same....and in 2004 I had a mass removed along with the remaining ovary and uterus and that mass was benign.
Good luck and keep us posted!!!!

You have been given good advice. Please see a gyn/onc for a second opinion. A cyst may or may not be cancerous but you owe it to yourself to have the best chance.
Keep us informed.

I agree with the above women that you should see a GYN oncologist. I was diagnosed with ovca 9/03 at age 36. I had my TAH/BSO by a GYN oncologist.
Research shows that women with ovca who had surgery by a GYN oncologist live longer.
My CA-125 was 209 before surgery. At my initial appt with my GYN oncologist she told me that the 25 cm mass in my abdomen could be ovca or a borderline tumor (Also called a tumor of low malignant potential). She said I would need a TAH/BSO if it was ovca. She also recommended a TAH/BSO if it was a borderline tumor. I agreed to a TAH/BSO for ovca or a borderline tumor.
During my surgery, they took a frozen section of the mass and it was analyzed by 2 pathologists while I was still in the OR. These pathologists said it was a boderline tumor, so I had the TAH/BSO. BUT, I learned 2 weeks later that the final pathology report showed a borderline tumor AND ovca. I was glad that I had a GYN oncologist and had the TAH/BSO.
Good luck to you.
Best wishes, Stephanie

I agree that your hyster should be performed by a gyn/onc. As others have said, if this turns out to be cancer, they are the best to do the surgery. They know what to do to obtain the proper stage of the cancer so your followup treatment will also be right for you. If it turns out not to be cancer, then that would be great.
A CA 125 is just one possible indicator for cancer and for some women is not helpful. My onc said the important thing is where the number was and where it goes following surgery and chemo. The only way to know if it is a good indicator for you is to see what happens after surgery.

I am so sorry that you have this worry...but please take the other sister's advice and have a consult with a gyn/oncologist prior to your surgery. As has been said, they are the best ones to deal with any possibility of gyn/cancer.
And also hang on to this thought....it really could be benign...in which case we'd all breathe a huge sigh of relief along with you...but just in case, I'd feel a lot more comfie knowing that you were in the best possible hands.
Best,
K9
