Losing hair

I am just wondering if anyone has or had a problem with hair loss after having a hysterectomy? I am 3 months post-op today. I have been losing my hair ever since my surgery. I am not talking a little hair loss here. It is coming out in gobs! My hair brush has to be cleaned out after every use as it has tons if hair in it. In the shower I can literally pull hair out in big clumps. My Mom said that some people have hair loss after having anesthesia. But I have had other operations and this has never happened. They let me keep my ovaries so I am hoping it wouldn't be hormones. I don't know what to do! I don't know if I should make a doctor's appointment or what. I would appreciate any input.
Thanks much,
Ann

If I were having that extreme of hair loss after 3 months, I'd call the doc. There are lots of things that can cause hair loss - I have a DD that lost a lot of hair due to stress for about 6 months. Some lose hair in response to hormonal changes, others in response to thyroid. Once you and the doc can identify the cause, it's probably an easy fix. Meanwhile, brush more gently, okay??

I have hair loss due to an anti-body in my blood. Your thyroid could be out of wack ~Ask your Doc to test your blood. The T3/T4 is just for thyroid and will not show if you have anti-body in your blood. Ask the Doc to test for it also. Maybe , its just from the surgery and will come back~ I hope so and understand your concern. My hair has been falling out for years now :~(

YES! I posted a similar question when I was about 3 months post op. I too kept my ovaries. I would not say my hair was coming out in clumps, but there was more than the usual in the shower drain. I also fought a bit of acne for the first few months as well so I just attributed it to my hormones adjusting (my very humble, non-medical opinion!). I don't think it lasted long.

Best Wishes -

Yes, I noticed hair falling out 7 months post op and it is still falling out. I had my thyroid checked and it was not working, Then a year after it started I found out that I had low ferritin which I have read that if you had low ferritin levels you can't grow hair. Now I am taking iron and am hoping that the loss will slow down. I have also read that alot of people have hair loss after a hysterectomy.

Thanks everyone for your input. I have made a doctor's appointment to once again check my thyroid(I had it checked before my surgery). It is a relief to know that I am not the only with this problem. I truly appreciate your replies!

Sincerely,
Ann
