Found a natural remedy for fatigue. Should I? Would you?
Hi all
Fatigue and tiredness keeps coming up on the board as a persistent problem, and I'm struggling at the moment.
I came across information about a natural remedy which is known as Rhabdiola Rosea AKA Golden Root (not golden seal root) or Arctic Root. It claims to be good for the kind of tiredness and brain fog that we've been getting.
The question is - is it better to go with the how the body's feeling and accept the tiredness as a part of the healing process, or is it better to take a remedy which will help get through the day with a bit more vigour?
I'd be interested in your opinions.

Hi livingdoll,
I haven't ever heard of this, so can't really comment on it and how it might work. Whether it would be wise to use something like that is probably an individual thing. I think it is different for us who are further out from our surgeries than it would be for someone who is not very far post op. You are about 4 months out. I don't know if you have had complications or anything that you are dealing with. If you aren't it might be just fine to try something like that. I think the best policy when we're recovering from a major surgery like this is to always check with our drs and make sure we aren't going to be taking something that would interfere with our recovery.
I would be amazed if this substance could give you so much energy that you would go out and hurt yourself. If you try it, you'll have to let us know how it is.
 's, Rita

I'd get whatever information I could on this (before purchasing it) and run it by my ob/gyn especially if you are on HRT or have any health problems that require a daily dose of meds. Bear in mind, some doctors 'pooh-pooh' alternative methods. But at least he/she will know that you are serious about getting a solution to your symptoms and don't want to take the "this will pass" method. I've been given Premarin .45mg shortly after my LAVH/BSO so I would not take anything without MD approval, mostly because I don't know how they'll interact. Heck, there are guidelines for taking certain vitamins and supplements with foods or beverages or without food, in order to get their full effectiveness. I applaud you for taking action...just please be careful!

Thanks for your replies, which back up my natural caution. The only problem I have is the tiredness, and am not on any other medications (I kept an ovary and seem to be producing hormones on a 28 day cycle). There is some good information available for this remedy, the Russians have been using it for years and it's been subject to some trials which have shown good results and the doses are too low for toxicity.
I will see my dr first, though. I've just read a post where the problem was anaemia even though it was unlikely - I'm also unlikely to be anaemic, but it's worth checking this out.
Thankyou.

You might want to try Ginseng. I have had pretty good results with it (I am 40). Maybe you will want to discuss your diet with your dr. too. If it is not balanced you cannot make up for it with a pill/herb. Hope you feel better soon.

I have taken evening primrose oil on a regular basis for years. It also helps women in menopause decrease some of their symptoms. My girlfrined who has MS got me started on the evening primrose, her neurologist reccomended it. I am surprized as to how many pre menopausal and menapausal women I have met that have found a positive result from the evening primrose oil.
As a cardiac nurse I would caution anyone with using Ginseng. Ginseng will prolong bleeding (as will most herbs, evening primrose and vitamine E for example) , but worse than bleeding Ginseng will increase blood pressure and heart rate.

Thanks Kelly, for the ginseng input. It was recommended to me but I have HBP / Cholesteral and family hx of heart disease. I haven't tried it yet because I don't see my cardiologist until Sept. but trust your word as a cardiac nurse.
