open incision

Hi girls, new here and am finding helpful info and kinship (I'm not alone!!). I've yet to see anyone who has the same situation as myself tho. Had tah plus removal of ovaries on 6/29. The next day dr came in to see me and discovered bleeding under bandage. Found out I had a hematoma and blood clotting in my abdomen. She opened up the stitches and now I have a 2 in. by 1/2 in. open incision that has to heal from the inside out. Blood still clotting and coming out slowly on the dressings. Was horribly black and blue all the way around my ab, hips, back but that's getting better. Anyone else had this happen???? It's very frustrating since I was told prior to my surgery that the outside would be healed in a few days, now is gonna be a couple of months!! Also, how long does this "spare tire" last and is that normal ????

hi sweetmelissa,

*raising hand* I have a similar circumstance. I also had a tah + 1 ovary on 6/24/05. Had my staples removed at 6 days, everything fine. Few days later the bottom of the incision pops open. I have exactly what you have... 2" x 1/2" open incision that has to heal from the inside out. I was going to the doctor's office DAILY to get it cleaned and repacked (with a gauze 4x4), then every OTHER day. Now twice a week. On the days I don't go to the doctor, I clean it myself at home with stuff she gave me (a syringe and a bottle of peroxide/saline mixture) I don't have much blood in the incision tho. It's just... open. And it hurts like hell. Especially the past few days it feels like it's ripping open more. Doctor hasn't given me any idea about when this is gonna be CLOSED (God I want it closed so badly). Your doctor said months???

TAH + LSO 6/24/05
4 years of uncontrollable bleeding/clotting & one cyst-infested ovary.

I feel for you guys. I have TWO open areas along my belly incision. It started out with really hard, red lumps. They finally opened up and started draining the nasty stuff. Now I have to pack both area with an acetic acid solution once a day. I have to go tomorrow to the doc so he can tell me if they are healing or not. If not, it's back to the castle for me for more surgery. I'm just praying for the best.

Glad to know I'm not alone. I've been taking care of mine myself, no doctor, packing, solution, etc. My incision is completely "filled" with blood clotting like right out to the surface of my skin. When a piece comes out, pretty much another moves forward into it's place. I think it's starting to dry up some and maybe beginning the healing process. Yes, she said it would be another month before it MAY be healed on the outside. I just keep changing my bandage many times a day, hoping each time that it's getting down to the last of the bleeding (clotting), it's so frustrating!!! Decided that the Lord must not have trusted that I would take it easy enough and wanted to make sure I was careful, lol. Oh well, as long as things improve at least a little each day. Now have a yeast infection!!!! Just shoot me now!

I had the same experience of hematoma draining big time through my incision, with a huge bruise from hip to armpit on one side only! Ended up spending 9 days in the hospital and picking up a hospital infection. At nearly 6 wks postop I'm still getting some drainage from the incision and vaginally. Have red granuloma scar tissue both places that tends to produce fluid and not dry up, being treated with silver nitrate. Crossing my fingers! I guess we are not alone after all!

Yup - not alone - I have about 10 cm open I am told... not sure how long it will take to heal - but I have home care coming in every other day to change the dressing - they are wound specialists and did a MUCH better job than ER did!! Doesn't cost anything here in BC where I live - I guess they consider it to be cheaper than being in a hospital... and while I am not driving - it is really nice to have them come to me...

They have some neat stuff to put on it... packing - draining catch - skin care... tis all good thus far - only 2 treatments though... but really pleased thus far...

Same here, frightened the life out of me and DH when I started bleeding, I had just got out of teh shower and it wouldn`t stop.
To cut a long story short, it took 19 weeks to completely heal for me. So when the doctors and nurses say you should be 'at this stage' by now. You can wave bye-bye to that and take things slowly again. I was told not to do the excersises until I felt completely ready for them.
Now 9 months down the line I still have the odd twinge and stuff but hopefully well on my way to a better recovery!!!!!

Take care girls, love to you all...

open incision

I went for my 1 week post-op yesterday and found that I also had fluid draining from my belly-button incision. They had to open it up, and I'm having to clean and pack it daily - this is not fun!! Then this morning I noticed that there was a little blood coming from another incision. I don't know if this is the same thing or not. The draining from the belly-button incision was orangey-pink, and this is bright red. Has anyone had this happen?
Thanks for all the good advice and info I get from this site!

It took ten weeks for my incision to close. They wanted it to heal from the inside out.

Hi Jesa - I would call the doctor - I have home care coming in and looking after my would - I have some drainage but not sure what color or such - I know there is blood involved though... sounds like there is either a blood clot coming up and working its way out or you have an infection that is also rising to the surface - better up than down I say!!

Call the doc and see what they say... better to be safe than sorry....

Hugs!!
