Ambien isn't working, what has worked for you?

I've had insomnia all my life. I've taken Sonata and that did nothing. I take Ambien 10 mg now but that often does not work either. One thing I've found lately that works is trying to read a book at bedtime. It seems like if you're trying to stay awake, your eyes want to go shut. Give that a try.
The melatonin only worked short term for me. I also cut out all caffiene after noon. I have some good nights and some bad nights. But, oddly, sleep better since my TAH/BSO. I think PMS hormones played a big part in my insomnia because it was always worse the week before the .

Don't laugh

Long before my procedure I used to have terrible insomnia, likely job stress induced. What helped me was listening to late night talk radio through an ear-piece. For whatever reason, music didn't work, but the voices did--not too loud, either. I got so that no more than ten minutes after tuning in, I was gone to dreamland. Warning: a nice relaxing glass of wine or two before bedtime does not work. You'll be wide awake again at 3:00.

Xanax might be the ticket for sleep

Cassidy, nothing worked for me except for Xanax. The generic is very cheap and has helped me sleep every night without fail. I take .50 and I am asleep in about 30 minutes. It can be habit forming, addicative etc. but so are sleep aids and quite honestly sleep is so important!

Good luck, I am sure you will find something that works for you!

maybe if DH helps with the "dry run" or "outercourse", maybe that along with you're sleeping pills, will help you goto sleep.
Ladies,

Be sure to check with your own doctor before engaging in "outercourse". Doctors have different recommendations about this - it can depend on what type of surgery you have had, if any repairs were done, and how your body is healing. Some doctors say orgasm is ok, some want you to wait. Be safe and call your own doctor first.

The only things that have worked moderately well for me are Remeron and Trazedone (both antidepressents that happen to cause drowsiness) , which I am going to consider going back on if my dr agrees. (But no other antidepressant has ever helped me with this.) The drawback is these have to be taken every night. If your insomnia is short term, you probably want something else.

The other suggestion I heard recently from a doctor (no mine) was the use of Sonata, but only for the nights that you wake up. (I have had trouble staying asleep as well as getting to sleep). So that might be another option.

Very best wishes to you; keep us posted on how you are doing.
I am now on Lunesta 3 mg and it's been wonderful. I have had issues with chronic insomnia for six years -- I have tried Ambein, Sonata, Trazadone (which gave me violent and bizarre dreams) and all OTC stuff.

This is the first time in YEARS that I can say that I can sleep and STAY asleep and feel rested and not drugged in the morning. I also take 2 mgs of Ativan at night as well -- but that's for panic attacks.

But Lunesta is AWESOME, JMO.

Lunesta

Thanks

I clipped a coupon for a free trial of Lunesta as everyone who's tried it says it works.

Ambien isn't working, what has worked for you?

Lunesta doesn't work for me. I have been on it for the past 6 weeks and it worked at first, but now it only gives me 2 or 3 hours of sleep. The other night I was wide awake at 3:10 a.m. thinking of the song "It's Another Tequila Sunrise" for some reason??? So I rewrote the words to make it a Lunesta song. To see, click here.

Ambien isn't working, what has worked for you?

hi all,
I have a good suggestion.... Chardonnay! wine finally tastes good, ( 6 days post op) so I know Im coming back slowly...... ... I actually took one tylenol pm last night as well that worked wonders as I have developed this intermittent tickle in my tonsiils, almost allergy-like, that forces me to cough ( can you say ouch???.... but this did the trick and I slept great.

Something that has worked well for me, but actually is not for sleeping, but doesn't hurt is phenergan. It is for upset stomach and nausea, but works great for me. Usually get about 6-7 hours of sleep.
