Does hysterectomy affect the thyroid?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid in Dec 2004. Jan 2005 had it checked again and it was at a normal level. However I think I felt more tired being on it. On 7/19/05 I had LSH with removal of cervix and ovaries. I have had hardly any pain at all therefore cannot understand this extreme fatigue and lightheadedness that I feel at going on 3 weeks post-op. Could it be related to thyroid. Anyone had similar symptoms

Does hysterectomy affect the thyroid?

Tiredness at 3 weeks post op is pretty normal, even up to 12 months tiredness seems to be a problem for some sisters, I actually felt worse in this way around the 3 week mark, I put it down to the first few weeks getting the anesthetic out of the system, stopping pain meds etc. You didn't say if you were using any HRT yet, if not suddenly being without ovaries can impact on your thyroid. I was put on HRT straight away but found around 3 months post op my medication for underactive thyroid needed adjusting. Now going on 11 months post op, my dose has been adjust back to what it has been for most of the 15 years I've had a thyroid problem. Take it easy , you are early in your recovery and your body has alot of adjustments to make

Does hysterectomy affect the thyroid?

My thyroid dosage changed after my hysterectomy. My Primary Care doctor sent me for blood work and then lowered the dosage a little. He asked me to go for more blood work in three months, after which he again adjusted it. The third time (within the first year post-op) he adjusted it to the level it is now. My opinion is that because I was put on Premarin and that may have some correlation.
Ask your Primary Care Physician if he thinks you need to be checked. It doesn't hurt to ask.
