Ovaries-going, cervix-???

Morning ladies,

I was furloughed at work last night, wide awake now, and questions are burning.

I will be having a hyst/BSO, hoping to get it scheduled for late Sept/early Oct. But removing my cervix is troubling me.

I have a history of abnormal paps. Around a decade ago I had cryo for 'mild cervical dysplasia'. Negative paps until last year. Last December my pap (and 4 paps and 1 biopsy later) have been read as ASCUS -which is not cancer or even pre-cancer) I am HPV (high and low risk) Negative. But the historical 'dysplasia' haunts me.

I already have stress incontinence. Two docs have mentioned "mild" bladder prolapse. Coughing, sneezing, hard laughing, and squatting are "troublesome" as it is.

Does a current ASCUS pap dictate cervix removal during hysto? Have any women here kept there cervix despite ASCUS? Good results?

I need pelvic floor support. Kegels are no good for me. I tore connective tissue in my pelvis years ago.

I am just afraid that stress incontinence will worsen if I have this hyst.

Experiences please.

It is the norm to take the cervix if you have a history of abnormal paps. You might use the search at the upper right of the forum and type in cervix, there are many threads that discuss that topic. As far as incontinence, does your doc know about this. Bladder prolapse, or cyctocele, is a common repair(called anterior repair) done along with a hyst. Make sure your surgon knows about this as they can do something about it. If for some reason your doc says he can't I would find a differnet doc. GL HTH some, ang

I have a prolasped uterus and it's my understanding that they take the cervix - it's a package deal.

I had the hardest time deciding on keeping/not keeping the overies. After reading many of the resource articles and ready many posts, I have decided to keep mine, unless they are completely unhealthy.

I had by gall bladder removed 2 years ago and haven't noticed any difference.

Good luck with your decision.

I would strongly advise having a urodynamics test to determine what is causing your leakage. You may have stress incontinence that could be corrected along with your hysterectomy. Consider seeing a urogynecologist, a doctor trained in repairs of the pelvic floor. A urogyn would take care of the hysterectomy and any other repairs that are necessary. They do a VERY thorough exam and will check for rectocele, cystocele, etc, so you don't have to go through it again. Click here to find a Urogyn in your area. Good luck.

The type of hysterectomy will determine whether or not you can keep your cervix. The cervix is removed during a vaginal hysterectomy. You have the choice to keep or remove the cervix with an abdominal hysterectomy. Discuss everything with your gynecologist. You may want to ask for a referral to a urologist to see what he might recommend concerning your bladder.

Good luck to you!
