Yeast Infection

I had a complete abdominal hystertectomy 10 weeks from tomorrow.

Last weekend was the first intercourse I've had in two years. Following intercourse, I started with a yeast infection. Has anyone else had this happen or does anyone know if this is common.

I had repeated cycles of yeast infections in the past, but I haven't had one in a very long time. I wasn't sure if it was caused by the fact that I hadn't had intercourse in such a very long time, or if it was something to do with the surgery and/or the hormone patch I am using (Climatra).

Any advice would be welcomed.

Thank you.

Yeast Infection

Hi Have you been to the DR for a swab, to be sure it's a yeast infection? Yeast infections are fairly common post hyst, but so are various other conditions that can feel a lot like a yeast infection at first. The most usual reason we get more yeast infections after surgery is low estrogen levels in the vagina, followed by destruction of the vaginal flora by antibiotics, bowel preps, etc.. at the time of surgery. Even if you're on HRT, chances are you may not have enough estrogen in the vaginal walls, because systemic estrogen has a hard time getting there (poor blood circulation). You might want to check out this article on post op yeast infections and possible treatments:

and also this one on vaginal dryness, which feels a lot like the early stages of a yeast infection, and is caused by low levels of vaginal estrogen:

I hope this helps!
