Donating blood - too soon?

When is it okay to donate blood after a major operation?

I am a little over 6 weeks post op and my incision is almost closed (i.e. vulnerable to being opened if pressed the right way and enough pressure but no "meat" is showing and a little bit of oozing). Hallelujah. Is it too soon? Only thing I can think of to help the blood supply>>>>>>hurricane victims.

Thanks and have a wonderful Labour Day!

There are tons of "rules"--I dont actually see anything specific about surgery but read and see if you fall into any of the other categories.

Donating blood - too soon?

I talked to the doctor's nurse yesterday to ask about when to stop donating blood. I'm a regular donor and with surgery scheduled for December she suggest I stop donating in October. I never thought to ask about after surgery. If I had to make a guess, I would say 2 months.

Donating blood - too soon?

so glad you posted this!

tuesday when i realised how dire the katrina situation was getting, i called Lifeblood where i donate twice a year to ask the same question and about guidelines concerning cancer, since the pathology from my surgery showed a low-malignancy type of ovarian cancer.
Lifeblood wouldn't accept blood until 6 weeks post surgery (for donor's safety), and of course you must not be on certain medications (which i am not). but specific to the type of tumor i had and the fact i am not on chemo, my cancer (mucinous borderline tumor) is not a problem for donating. then thursday the red cross called to ask me to donate and i told them about my conversation with Lifeblood. red+ said 2 - 3 weeks is acceptable, as long as other criteria is met and you are feeling well, and agreed that my type of cancer is not a problem. so i have an appointment to donate on wednesday. almost 4 weeks post op. have a good breakfast the day you go in.
