Appendix

Hi ladies,

I've read some posts that mentioned removal of the appendix. I was curious - Is this something that is normally done or only if there is something wrong with it?

Hi Dusky,

It seems to me from what I've read here that some women ask to have their appendixes out, or their doctors offer to do so, as a precaution. Of course if there is something wrong it comes out.

I asked my doctor if she would take mine out and she said NO. I think she even said that they now think there is some benefit to having the appendix, but I really can't remember what it was she said, as it wasn't a big concern for me.

Good question Dusky.... I too had read much of the same thing and heard it from ladies as well. Back when my mom had her hyster a few decades ago they seemed to believe that it was best to take the appendix while they were in there. I asked my doc about it when the time for my surgery came and he said that unless he see's something wrong with it, it stays.

I'm sure there must be some good reason why it's there in the first place... but, goodness knows I have no clue.

My Dr. took mine. He explained some pros and cons of having it removed at my pre op and we decided to take it. I never wanted another surgery if I can help so I said take it. I think it is up to you and your Dr.

My Dr. gave me the option of taking it or leaving it. I said "TAKE IT ALL!!!" I don't want to ever have another surgery....certainly not abdominal.

And she said if its not broke...don`t fix it! I also voiced concern about never wanting another abdominal surgery and she said...' you might need your gall bladder or spleen out some day too...don`t ask me to take those now!'. Must admit..she had a point! Just wondering...do they call appendix patients princesses,too?
