Simple ovarian cyst removed, cancer worry later?

Hello everyone. I had a TAH leaving only 1 ovary by my request. My OB ( whose specialty is oncology )recommended taking everything but due to the heart disease in my family, I felt I needed to try & keep one ovary. I gave him the final call once he was in there . The remaining one had, what he called a simple cyst, which he removed.
My OB visited me the day after my surgery in the hospital he said, "don't blame me if you get ovarian cancer later on." Don't ya love that?!
Can anyone tell me what the chances are that it will grow back & turn into cancer? I decided right there in the hosptial that I have to have a plan of attack with the CA 125 & ultrasounds but how often will I need to do those? Any other test that I would need? My 4 week appt is 9/21 which I will ask then but I wanted to hear other things to compare it to. Thanks for the help!

TAH, ablation, adenomyosis, endometriosis, cysts, fibroids, 1 ovary left.

I am so sorry your doctor was not as supportive as I would have liked him to be! I hope you enjoy a smooth recovery. If you tell your gyn how his comments upset you, I think he will appologize. At least, I hope so.

Let's look at this logically. Did you have cancer in your other ovary? Have you had any other cancer? Is there a family history of cancer? Is it reasonable for him to assume a simple cyst now indicates the likely hood of ovarian cancer later? If so, then I think you'd want to keep an eye on the remaining ovary. I'd think he'd want to, as well.

You are in charge of your medical decisions. Your doctor should support you once you've made your choice. At least, that is the sort of partnership my gyn and I have and I wouldn't trade it. I hope you and your gyn have that, as well.

I'm sorry to hear you are having to deal with a less than considerate Dr. right now.

The CA125 and transvaginal ultrasound are the best tools we currently have available to detect the possibility of ovca. Unfortunately, most of us don't exhibit symptoms until we are at an advanced stage of ovca.

If you have no risk factors, than follow the advice of your gyn.

Please let us know if you need any other help....

Thanks for the support. I have no history of cancer any where that I know of, thank God. Purely preventative at this point. This OB was highly recommended to me from a lot of different people, independently, but I have not been going to him for very long. Just because they are skilled professionals, it doesn't mean they have a good bedside manner. I seem to have a bad track record of docs who say stupid things to me and I am beginning to think that they are all like that!?
Other than that incident, I feel I can talk with him about all of my concerns.
Do you think I should have yearly tests or maybe every 6 months?
Basketnut, I am thrilled you are in remission and keep dancing w/ Ned! I'll be praying for you!

Simple ovarian cyst removed, cancer worry later?

I had a simple cyst on my right ovary removed in 1994 and I have had no other problems with it. I kept it during my TVH. I also have heart disease in my family and I thought it was more important to guard myself against that. We are going to keep a very careful watch on my ovary from now on.
