Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

I was wondering if there were anyone out there that has rls and had a hystorectomy? I have severe rls and am kind of worried on how I will be able to rest while recovering. And what kind of impact it be on me when sleeping since I jerk every 6 mins while sleeping. I'm afraid that my pain will be worse at night when sleeping due to my jerks as according to my hubby I not only jerk my feet and legs but the hips too.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Jan, I can't imagine having my legs twitching every 6 minutes. Poor you!! Since my surgery I have had one or two nights where my legs were restless and I could not settle down. They were miserable nights, I feel for you. Sorry I can't help, hoping to bump you up so someone with experience can help. Good luck. 's

I have mild RLS and didn't even think about mentioning that to the doctor pre-op. As I was sleeping off the anesthesia for the first 8 hours after surgery, no problem. However, that night I had a lot of "jerks." At one point (in my druggy state) I buzzed the nurse and asked her if I was having seizures or something in my legs. She went away, called someone (probably my doc) and came back and reassured me that I'd be OK. I've had slightly increased RLS since surgery - but then, I'm not used to being so inactive. Do talk about it with your doctor pre-op if you can.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Hello, I was diagnosed with RLS and mild sleep apnea after my hyst. My hyst help me uncover other medical problems I was having but couldn't cope with due to the overwhelming medical problems leading up to the hyst. I have always been a problem sleeper so I slept in a recliner the first night I came home and than occasionally after that when combating bouts of insomnia. Talk to your docter about it so they will at least annotate your records. I also suffer from night terrors and have to take Clonopin to sleep throught the night. DH says I steal the covers and thrash my legs. Probably time to go back to the sleep lab. I still wake up tired and don't think I'll ever be a morning person. I've learned that it is not a character flaw but part of my physical make up. Take care and good luck with your surgery. I wish you a pain free recovery and post-op experience.

I had some RLS after my Hyst. I thought maybe I had a blood clot. Then found out some women suffer with RLS after a Hyst. Mine went away after 4 weeks post-op. I just kept my stockings on they give you at the hospital and that really helped me.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

I had a friend who suffers from RLS. I used to laugh at her as I could not imagine what it was like. Well, I could not believe that after the op my legs would ache down to the bone and hubbie would run them with my Mary Kay Mint Bliss cream and this really helped. Now when I see me friend she laughs at me
It got better anyway, only have it now and then and a good rub before bed settles it down.

Thanks ladies for being such wonderful guides and help.

Not sure if I have RLS but when I would go to sleep my legs ached so bad. I found out I was very low on iron. Have been taking iron (3 daily) for 3 months now and have had no aching legs at night. My surgery date is Sept. 16th. TVH. I am very confindent that things will go well.

Restless Leg Syndrome (RLS)

Jan,

Could the Restless Leg Syndrome be related to your other problems (which require a hysterectomy)? I ask because a few months ago I was having RLS whenever I would ly down on the couch and sometimes had severe pain in my legs - maybe it was due to iron defiency anemia (I had been bleeding heavily for months). Like Sandi, I've been taking iron for awhile and haven't had the leg problems lately.

I also see we have the same surgery date! Hope we can comfort each other.

No Louise, I have had rls for a very very long time. I think since I was a kid but hard to say. So since I already have it severly then I am wondering what it is going to be like when I have my surgery and sounds like it is going to be worse. But anywhoo to you girls that were talking about the iron that is one of the causes for secondary rls, which is caused from low iron, magnisium, or surgery, or other medical conditions. I have whats called primary rls where I got it from family. Primary is family related and since my dad, mom, and his mother all have it guess what good ole me has it too. So I think I got my message and I had better be sure I let my doc know so I get my meds while I am in the hospital. Right now I am on my 7th pill to try and get it under control and I think its going to work but still working on the right dose that will get me through the night at least. I have it happen during the day too when I sit at work. Ok well thanks for all your replies.
