to lose. or not to lose...the pre-op question!

Does anyone know if it is "safe" physically, to lose much weight before having surgery? Is it okay on your heart? I've heard some bad stories. Has anyone's dr said anything about this to them?

to lose. or not to lose...the pre-op question!

My doc said I could lose as much weight as I wanted before the surgery, as long as I was doing it "healthy".
She said every 5 pounds makes a difference in our health.

I lost about 40 pounds in the six months before my surgery. You want to be in really good health going into surgery though, so don't starve yourself. Slowly losing weight by getting more exercise and good eating habits is the best way to go about it. Good luck.

to lose. or not to lose...the pre-op question!

I ldidn't lose weight right before my hyst but I did lose about 75 pounds some years ago. I have felt soooo much better since then. Now I can actually walk up stairs without losing my breath

The important thing is to do it in a healthy way - no crash diets. Exercise helped me a lot too. I joined a gym and exercised just about daily. I also walked a lot, it all helped.

I think that just to be on the safe side, maybe you should discuss this with your dr. He/she might have some views or advise about it.

Best wishes.

Yeah...I'm at a gym too. Eating nutritionally too. I had a personal trainer also. I just heard that it may be too harsh on your body if sudden weight loss was achieved right before surgery. I don't thinkg so ! Thanks!
