Question - sex and foley cath sex and foley cath

I got this off a spinal cord rehab web site:
"If you use an indwelling catheter (Foley catheter) for bladder management, you may leave the catheter in for intercourse or you may take it out. If you choose to leave it in: for women, just tape the catheter out of the way...."
My dr told me no sex but my boyfriend and I went crazy and had sex anyway. If the only reason not to have sex is risk of infection, and I already have an infection and am on antibiotics why cant we have sex? We both showered first and it was wonderful.
Please sisters, help! All the stress of me being sick plus no sex till January when I get my bladder repair??

Can I ask if intermittent self-cathing was offered as an option? I've done both, and to only have to deal with the cathing 3 X a day for a min. is so much better on your emotionally than 24/7.

Tacy, you only have to self-cath 3 times per day? You must have a nice large bladder! Or is it because you can urinate some on your own and use the self-cathing 3 times per day to make sure your bladder is totally empty? My mom self-caths and does it about 8 times per day.

Best wishes!

Tacy,
I have never heard of self cath. The reason I have to wear the cath is because my bladder has a hole in it and all the urine leaks from my vagina if its not in. My bladder doesnt have the capability to hold any urine untill it is repaired, or spontainiously closes and heals from wearing the cath.

Oh dear Please don't follow the advice given on websites (including this one) if it contradicts that of your own DR, who knows your case best. Discuss it with your DR first.

The advice on the spinal cord injury website was for ladies who are a long time post surgery, and have a catheter long term or permanently due to spinal cord injury, NOT due to having just had recent vaginal surgery or having a torn/injured bladder. The danger to you from having sex too soon is so much more than "mere" infection. Any rough motion in the area can tear your bladder further, reducing the likelihood that you will ever be able to heal without further surgery.

I'm not trying to scare you... well, yes, I am. Please call your DR and tell him/her what you've done. And DON'T do it again until your DR says it's OK! I know it's frustrating, but nobody ever died from not having sex soon enough. The risks you're taking are far greater than the benefit you're getting, no matter how much fun it was.

s,
-Linda

I have the same problem as you. I have a large hole in my bladder and my urologist says that it won't heal on it's own. My hysterectomy was 10/10 and he wants to repair it on 12/2. Some doctors want you to wait 3-6 months but he wants to do it asap. Has your doc said anything like that? I don't want to have it too early but I am so tired of the catheter and the pads and depends since I leak from my vagina even with the catheter. Did your leak occur about 2 weeks after surgery? Do you have a hole at the top of your vagina to let the urine out? My stitches came out or my doc said the urine would have gone inside my stomach cavity. Help! What do most doc's say concerning this and where can I find a doc who can repair it successfully?

Surfer Babe
I called my uro and confessed. I go in Nov 19th now for the cystoscope and check up.
Pup,
Since I had a bladder injury during surgury I wore the Foley for 19 days. As soon as it was removed the urine started flowing, just a few drops at first but it graduated to full incontinece like you. I am happy to report that now the cath is catching all the urine! YIPEE
Yes,The hole is at the top of my vagina.
My uro hasnt discussed surgury with me yet. Everytime I ask him he always says we must wait for the test results. I guess I find out Wednesday. Ill keep you posted.
Feel free to private messsage me Little Pup, I know what you are going threw and I am sorry.
Will your surgury be abdominal? Vaginal? Please tell me any details.

I posted a new thread but for all you sisters I just wanted to say I am going to have surgury as soon as possible. Abdominal and vaginal. Bikini cut right over my just healed incision.
Dr said go ahead and have sex! Yipee! I told him how important it is to me, he asked if it hurt, I said not bad enough to be celebate!
I am in the market for a chastity belt for after the surgury. LOL

We didnt have sex after all. My boyfriend is afraid of hurting me! The dr said the hole is very far up there. I have been having problems with my cath. I got a new one put in and it leaked so I went back to the dr and the assured me the water baloon was full, I went back again to the dr and they put in a new cath and it didnt leak much today. If I lay on my back it leaks so I try to sleep on my side. Still waiting for my VVF repair surgury date.
