Anything i can pack to releive that terrible itching from the morphine?!!!

From my last surgery, which was an emergency appendectomy (sp?) I remember itching like CrAzY from the morphine. What I can't recall is whether that was happening while I was on it or after it was removed - maybe it was a withdrawl symptom?

Regardless, is there anything that I can pack for my trip to the castle that will help releive this incessant itching - or does it just have to run it's course?!!!

Thanks for any advice you can send my way!!!

{{{queanie}}} after I had my second c section, I had a HORRIBLE reaction to the morphine. It happened as it was wearing off and all the nerves were busy dancing under my skin coming back to life. I itched all over my body. Between my toes was the worst because I couldn't reach it! The nurse asked the dr what to do and he gave my a simple script for benedryl and it worked wonderfully. When I had my hyster I requested NO morphine. You may suggest that to your dr. There are any number of meds that can replace morphine. Good Luck to you !

I had the same problem, so this time no morphine for me! But I did have a reaction to the Dillauded too... itch, itch, itch!!!! But they gave me benedryl and it was better. Just let the dr know and he can give you something else! Take care!

Same answer from this sister too!

Hi,

When I woke up I had the morphine pump and the more I woke up the worse I was itching. My pump was changed to Dillauded and Benedryll was ordered. Worked great to get me through that first night with no itching.

Hi there.
I, too, react to morphine so I had dilauded. I was later given demerol to which I didn't itch but was so nauseous they gave me gravol.
Talk to your doctor about your reaction to morphine. They don't have to give it to you.

Good luck,
Autumn

Hi,

I am very sensitive to meds and had heard that morphine can cause itching and that some meds cause nausea. When the anesthesioligist called me the night before my surgery filling me in and asking me some questions, I asked him about this, and he said he would put medicine in my IV. I did not have any problem with either after my surgery.

Good luck on your up coming surgery.

Hi

You certainly don't have to have morphine ... a word with your anaesthetist will sort that. The itching for me turned into pain and hives and then my fingers swelled up like a bunch of bananas on the IV hand! Even if they offered some sort of antidote, I still wouldn't have morphine in the future!

There are plenty of other drugs you can have. Have a chat with your anaesthetist before surgery and you'll have no problems.

Good luck.

Hi! Maybe you should pack a "back scratcher"...it's one of the suggested items to bring to the hospital! Benadryl is also good but I'm assuming you won't have to bring your own. Good luck.
