TVH Tomorrow and nervous

My doc has ordered CBC on the admit instructions and I am scared to death they will say one of my counts is a bit elevated and they can't perform the surgery... Can anyone tell me why they order this? Do they even get the results back before the surgery starts? HELP!!! I'm going out of my mind worrying...

I had my re op the day before my surgery and was told that they can get the results pretty quickly. I hope that your's turns out perfectly but if there is a problem, I think it's best to know ahead of time. It can help prevent possible complications.

Please try not to worry too much about it today - stress isn't good for you ( easier said than done - I know ). I'll be praying that all goes well for you. Please keep us updated as you can

Best wishes.

The CBC will tell the Surgeon if you have an infection (WBC), but if you don't feel ill, I would be surprised if you have one. And the CBC also tests for anemia (low hgb)and it gives them a baseline for your post op hgb, and platelet counts among other things. Platelets are needed to assist your body in clotting, which you really need when they do any type of incisions (cuts). I believe that it would take a large deviation from normal to delay your surgery. I know it's hard to remain calm right now but remember that we are all thinking of you and praying for you. Please let us know how your surgery goes when you are able. Try to think positive and have happy thoughts! Take Care

Try not to worry about the CBC test. It gives the doctors alot of imformation about whats going on with you.
I have had CBC test done when I was sick with a virus. It's really nothing to be concerned about.

Im glad they do that. It tells them alot.
I know it's easier said then done, but try to relax...I'm sure you'll be okay

When I went in for my scheduled c-section in 03 they checked my anemia count. It was 8.1. I'm sitting on the metal surgeon table with a cathedar (sp) and just waiting... and waiting... and waiting. Finally a nurse comes in and informs me that they believe the test was incorrect and they wanted to redo it to make sure. They redrew the blood and I sat and waited (at this time I've shivering cause I'm so cold). Finally they come in and tell me the test was correct and I was too anemic to start surgery and they had to talk to my surgeon. So I remained sitting on this cold metal table (by this time my teeth are chattering I'm so cold). They finally come back in and let me know they will go ahead w/the surgery but not until they have at least 2 units of blood waiting in case I need a transfusion (they finally ask if I'm cold and give me 3 heated blankets). Finally they come in and say it's a go. Have any of ya'll ever had to sit on a cold metal table w/a cathader (sp) for 45 mintues??? Let me tell ya, it aint fun! LOL Oh, the thrills of being anemic.

Oh, I just realized I been rambling. To cut to the chase, the results of the test were back w/in 10 - 15 minutes.

posh

I had an awful cold when they took my bloodwork. I couldn't believe it: here I was healthy for months, and now, two days before surgery, I get sick? It must be pretty common with all the stress.

My preadmission papers clearly stated that if I got a cold, I had to tell my dr in case they needed to postpone surgery. Like I wanted that, so I just kept mum and decided to let the blood work stand on its own. Surgery went off as planned, my only problem that coughing after surgery is terrible!

Good luck and see you on the other side!
