bladder infection still ... 4 weeks on

I was wondering if this is normal.........after TAH/BSO I was discharged after 4 days with a bladder infection, alot of blood in urine, 4 weeks on and my second batch of cipro. I am the same, with pain when I urinate and pain now and then when I am resting - is this to be expected?
I am feeling not well, tearful, no energy and tired. But apart from that I know I am getting better, the swelly belly is not so swollen! Any advice would be appreciated.
Thanks.

bladder infection

One of my friends was on antibiotics for bladder infection for six whole months after surgery. She says her Dr told her that bladder infection was common after hysterectomy because of things getting bumped around and bruised during surgery, but her surgery was over 20 years ago. I would thnk both the surgery techniques and the available meds would have made such a regimen almost unheard of now, but your experience just may fall into the category of everybody's body responding differently to the stress of surgery. Extended treatment may just be necessary in your case.

Is your Dr sending your urine specimen out for culture? If not this needs to be done to make sure that you do indeed have an infection, what type of infection is present, and what antibiotic should be prescribed.

I had a nasty UTI before and after my surgery. I was on different antibiotics each time. I was on 10 days of cipro for the UTI I had (at the two weeks post-op mark). After seeing the results of the cultures, she said it wasn't just a bladder infection it was way into my kidneys. I felt SO MUCH MORE HUMAN after I got rid of that dang infection! In my case I think there was a silver lining... since I felt so crappy and wiped out... I was resting more during week three and not overdoing things. Good luck to you! I sure hope that you are feeling better soon.

Thank you all for your replies, it really helps to know that others have had the same type of symptoms, and to be able to ask others in the same position. I don't know if my doc sent off the specimin for culture, she checked it in the surgery whilst I was there, but if it is not gone by the end of these antibiotics I will ask her to send a specimin off. I am drinking lots of water and resting loads...its quite hard when you think you should be getting better to feel like this but very glad for the advice. Best wishes to you all. Sally

Just a quick FYI---cranberry and orange juice is not advised when one has a bladder infection; the acid in both of these juices is irritating to an angry bladder. These juices are best consumed when the bladder is healthy.

stay well

Diana, I had heard that after I drank all of that juice! You are SO RIGHT! I have heard that blueberry juice is less acidic. Please, PLEASE always ask your doctor about what they recommend when you have a UTI.

Hi, thanks for all the advice. I have been drinking tea and weak coffee (cause I like it) and blackberry juice watered down...and lots of water. Today at last, I feel a bit more human, one more day of the antibiotics to go....still have the pain so after tomorrow if no better I will go back to the docs. This site is brill!! Just been looking at "the cult". Hope you are all well and recovering nicely, best wishes. Sally

Youre right..blueberry juice and fresh/frozen blueberries are alot less acidic and have the same effect on the urinary tract as cranberries do.

happy healing
