Question - resistance training resistance training

Hi Ladies:

I first posted about this in post-op but I see this is really the more appropriate spot. My hysterectomy was for uterine prolapse along with bladder and rectal prolapses and a bladder sling.

Will going back to my normal resistance training routine when the Dr releases me to my normal activites increase my chances of more prolapses?? What about an abdominal routine? Typically I would do four workouts a week alternating between upper and lower body with a combination of resistance machines and dumb bells. For abs, I used a videotape workout.

I stopped running for fitness all together seven years ago when I first noticed my dropping uterus any time I ran. Can you run if you've had prolapse surgery??

Thanks in advance.

When you begin exercising again, I would advise to begin slowly. Even though your doctor may release you at 6-8 weeks post op, full recovery takes much longer. I would also discuss with your doctor as to what is and isn't allowed as everyone is different.

resistance training

I had my hyst, almost 5 years ago, to remove a fibroid-filled uterus and to repair a rectocele. Due to the posterior repairs, I do have some permanent restrictions, mostly where lifting and straining are concerned and I had additional restrictions that remained several months after I was released to resume most of my normal activities. Your may have similare restrictions as well.

Where resuming resistance training is concerned, be sure to mention the type of routine you are used to when you see your doctor. You may also want to ask about a referral for Pelvic Therapy. This therapy uses biofeedback technology to both monitor the strength and efficiency of pelvic contractions as well as to stimulate contractions. My therapist told me that if women were routinely referred for this type of therapy after a hyst, especially a TVH or when repairs are involved, there would be alot less occurances of incontinence after a hyst. This type of therapy is covered by most insurance companies.

Thumbs up - resistance training repairs

I will ask about Pelvic Therapy. I wish I had been referred for this at the various points where health practitioners knew that I had a prolapse problem. No health practitioner every called it that nor did anyone suggest that I was headed for a hysterectomy at age 45 without intervention. There was some vague advice about kegels that, like for the majority of women, didn't help. It makes sense that my resistence training should resume by first addressing the pelvic floor issues that can otherwise may be an ongoing problem. Thanks.

Do check it out. I work out regualry but have been advised to wait until 12 weeks and then take it slowly as if a beginner to start with. I am hoping it won't take too long but I do want to do it right.
