(((Kathy))), I'm assuming you're talking about a hormone patch, right? Have you discussed hormone therapy with your doctor so that you know the pros and cons of taking it? Have you gone over your family history and accessed the possible risks?
There is no law that says you
have to use it. You need to decide if the benefits it can provide outweigh the effects of not using it. One good way to do that is to research. There are lots of articles you can read in this link to the
Hormone Jungle Articles. There's even more in the
Resource Database in the category called
Hormone Jungle - Hormone Resources.
At my age of 49 (pushing 50 really hard!) I can't imagine not using hormones. My quality of life is so much better when my hormones are balanced. Out of balance I had no libido, no sexual response, and a host of the typical menopause symptoms. I feel much healthier and vibrant with my balanced hormones. I'm using the Vivelle Dot for estrogen, compounded progesterone cream, testosterone cream and Vagifem for vaginal dryness.
If you aren't comfortable with the idea of hormone replacement and opt not to use it be sure to let your doctor know. You'll want to get special advice on how to protect your bone health, etc.
