hysterectomy? endometrial hyperplasia

I'm new, I have a few questions. I had a pelvic ultrasound and the results stated endometrial thickening measuring 23.5mm and uterine fibroids. I then had a endometrial biopsy done which came back simply and complex hyperplasia. I go to talk to my gyn Wednesday. My question with the endometrial measuring 23.5mm, isn't that thicker than normal. Also my mother had uterine cancer at an early age. Just wondering what my options are. I am 41 years old and have 2 boys. I had my tubes tied. When they did the pelvic ultrasound it showed my ovaries where fine. I am anemic.

Hi Donna - I'm sorry to hear that you are having difficulties. Why did your doctor order the ultrasound? Were you having bleeding problems? I'm 56 and started having problems 2 years ago with bleeding. An ultrasound showed a 14mm lining (after 4 months of no periods) and a biopsy came back simple hyperplasia w/o atypia. I opted not to have a hyst and was treated with medication and repeat ultrasounds and biopsies. A year later another biopsy came back complex hyperplasia w/o atypia. I still did not have a hyst. Right now I'm fine but my gyn is watching me closely.

Also who gave you the results of the biopsy? It is important to know if there are atypical cells or not. Atypical cells are an indication that the hyperplasia can progress to cancer. Google hyperplasia and you will get a lot of information.

Whatever your doctor suggests, I would suggest you get a second opinion. Also if there is any chance you may have cancer please consult with an oncol/gyn. They are the experts when it comes to female cancer.

Good luck and please keep us posted on your progress. Also discuss with your doctor what to do about the anemia (I was advised to take iron pills). Please take care of yourself for your family - they need you.

Donna - please let me know what your doctor has to say and don't hesitate to get a second or even third opinion. You will be surprised at how they may differ in approaches.

Again, good luck and keep me posted.

My GYN told me that fibroids can make measuring your endmetrium less accurate. 23 is pretty thick, but it may be distorted.

Perhaps you can get off with a D&C.

I went to the DR today and he prescribed Aygestin for the thickening. Has anyone taken this? The side effects sound pretty bad, I take iron pills for irregular bleeding.

Hi Donna - I haven't heard of the medication you have been given. I was put on Megesterol (generic Megace) to keep the lining thin. I'm kind of surprised your doctor doesn't want to do a D&C to help with the bleeding - it might buy you some time and also give a better analysis of what's going on inside.

Did you ask if the hyperplasia had any atypical cells. Tha's really important. Also a D&C would sample the entire lining not just the little bit that is taken with a biopsy.

Sure you don't want to get another opinion. I hope things get better for you soon. Please keep us posted.
