IV Antibiotics before surgery

My local news channel, aired a program about the connection between the lack of IV antibiotics given before surgery and infection after surgery.

One doctor recommended that a patient receive IV antibiotics at least one hour before surgery. When area hospitals began following this protocol, the number of infections were greatly reduced.

After reading the number of "sisters" who had infections after surgery, I was wondering how many of us received IV antibiotics at least one hour BEFORE the surgery?

My dr gave me 2 bags of Ancef (sp?) about 45 minutes before my surgery began.

I know from now on I'll request IV antibiotics before either myself or a family member has surgery!

IV Antibiotics before surgery

Many hospitals have adopted that philosophy as policy.

I did not have antibiotics before, and had no problems with infection. .............Deb

IV Antibiotics before surgery

I got IV antibiotics sometime after they knocked me out until I was discharged within 24 hours of surgery. They sent me home on a 7 day antibiotic prescription. I kept complaining to my family about cramping and gas etc. and we just chaulked it up to the surgery and blowing up my belly with gas (had a lavh). Well once I finished my antibiotic, in 24 hours I started heading south and ended back up in the hospital for 3 days for CT's and IV Antibiotics and Anit-Infectives.

Your post makes me wonder if they started IV Antibotics in pre-ops if it would have prevented this infection?!?!

IV Antibiotics before surgery

My doc gave me what she called a 'prophalactic' IV antibiotic during my surgery for that very reason. It was clindamycin and she didn't know I was allergic to it (neither did I!) until I started having problems in surgery. I turned beat red and my heart started going nuts! I ended up in the cardiac unit for 2 days when I woke up but there was no permanent damage to my heart, thank goodness.

I didn't get an infection in my belly but I've been having trouble with bladder infections since. That's a whole other kettle of fish though...

IV Antibiotics before surgery

I was given a bag of anti-biotics before the surgery and then one after the surgery--no infections or any problems.

IV Antibiotics before surgery

I was given IV antibiotics as soon as the IV was started in the pre - op holding area. So far no infections!

IV Antibiotics before surgery

I was given IV antibiotics in pre-op, and for the rest of that day, but then I have a heart murmer and this is standard practice. (I even have to take antibiotics when I go to the dentist).
I don't know if my hospital does that regularly or not.
I then ended up with some more antibiotics on my discharge day, 4 days later, as I had developed a UTI. Took them for 10 days and everything has been fine since then.
