Another question...RE: Birth Control pills to control bleeding

OK...Started my second to the last period on Sunday...Have been bleeding non stop since then, went to Dr. yesterday feeling exhausted and faint and weak and generally crappy. Did blood work, I went home, took a Lorcet and slept the day through. This morning the nurse calls me and tells me my blood count is low, and asks me if I am still bleeding. UH..Yeah. Getting to the point, Dr. put me on BC, three pills for three days, two pills for two days, then one pill a day till pkg is gone. Total of 13

Here is the question: If I take these pills as directed...and in thirteen days when they are finished am I not going to have ANOTHER period? Will this period be different, worse? I hate the unknown.

In my experience, and it has been a long time since I have had to take oral contraceptives, when you are done with the pink ones, you start your period, that hasn't changed has it?

Has anyone else had to take 21 days worth of B/C to level off bleeding, etc, in 13 days...? I do have a call in to Dr. with same questions.

Thanks. T.

Another question...RE: Birth Control pills to control bleeding

I first tried birth control pills to control bleeding. Shortly after hospitalized for something worse than a blood clot.(Dolcean something)My left leg and foot became about 3 times larger, Vascular Surgeon kept on saying to be grateful didn't die. I know birth control pills have worked for other friends fine. Please be careful though and watch for any swelling. I am now scheduled for SAH in 8 more days and looking forward to everything being over.

I stopped taking birth control 13 years ago due to vascular problems, headaches etc. I will keep close watch, especially at the levels I am currently directed to take.

Thanks. T

gee Tamque, I hope its not too late, but maybe when the doc calls back, you had better remind him about the vascular problems you had. He may not remember that far back. It would be best if he knew as it may change his treatment. Never mind, I just read back that the office called you back. I'd call them first thing in the morning though to remind them about those problems you had. What about iron pills? That would help some with the blood count. Take care

Another question...RE: Birth Control pills to control bleeding

Thanks. I will keep watch on my health. Luckily I eat very iron rich and healthy foods, if you don't count the cheesecake I had at lunch... I asked how this was going to help me...she said that the B/C would stop the bleeding, of which there was copious amounts...and would help with my cramping- I hope. They have not worked for me in the past for that...but we shall see. Thanks. T

Another question...RE: Birth Control pills to control bleeding

I had been on continuous birth control pills for the past two years. No one tells you that you run the risk of your uterine lining getting too THIN on them. At any rate, I spontaneously hemmorrhaged last May and ended up in the hospital. I had been on continuous OCP's because of migraines and bleeding. I continued having bouts of heavy bleeding even on the pills but would double up on them as your doctor said and the bleeding would stop. Everyone has always been rather nonchalant about OCP's but the GYN surgeon that I chose to do my surgery said - hormones are strong and people do not respect them enough. I would certainly call the doctor's office in the morning and talk to them if you have vascular problems. If they feel that it is safe, perhaps you could just stay on them until your surgery??
Good luck and feel better....

Another question...RE: Birth Control pills to control bleeding

Have you talked to your doctor about taking something else. I'm taking depo provera (it's a birth control shot) You get the shot while you have your period. There are some side effects. So I would suggest researching it first.

I am taking depo provera because I also have high blood pressure and it is one of the things I can use to control my bleeding.

I took depo before and never spotted or even had a period. This time I have had some spotting, but it is better than having a period.

Best of luck to you

Just fyi on depo...
there is now a "black box" warning on depo. If you are on it for more than two years, it is important to have a dexa scan to assure that you do not have osteoporosis. You should also take calcium with it.

Another question...RE: Birth Control pills to control bleeding

I was on BC for many years to help with the extreme pain, weird cycles, and heavy bleeding...it worked. Then about a year ago I started getting migraines right before or during the first day of my period, then the periods got longer...and started earlier; ended up that I had a Big A-- fibroid. Anyways, the BC didn't work to stop it, the Premarin didn't help (made me feel weird), and I'm on another pregesterone to try to control the bleeding while I wait for the Hyst. It's not working.

I just moved my op up again, seems like that was the only option for me to stop bleeding since the medicines didn't work.
