Micki,

You are still so early in your recovery! You are right that you don't want to push too hard. As the swelling from the trauma of surgery goes down, it should be easier to go.

However, if you feel you aren't going enough, you should call your doctor or go to the ER. You may need the help of a catheter to drain your urine.

I have heard other sisters talk of changing positions when the urinate to see if more would come out...bending forward or I think one said she would raise her hands over her head...anything to get your bladder to just shift positions a teeny bit and maybe that is all it will take.

Good luck,
Dee

can't seem to empty my bladder completely

I am 6 weeks post op and I STILL feel like I cannot completely empty my bladder. When I was in the hosp. and they took my cath out, I still couldn't go. They scanned my bladder each time I tried to void and couldn't, and it showed them how much urine was in there. They ended up having to straight cath me once, pulled it out after it was emptied and the next time I tried to go, I couldn't, so they cathed me again until the day I left...I FINALLY went on my own. When I went for my check yesterday, dr. felt the bladder and said it was still pretty swollen from surgery, which made me feel better, knowing that it is working, just slowly.

man thats a bummer, i hope my bladder problems dont last that long. i seem to finally get it empty after sitting there a long while. it starts, then stops. i need to push from the outside as well as the inside. with all the pushing i'm surprised i havent popped any stitches. the pain from the tvh isnt as bad as all the side effects aye

can't seem to empty my bladder completely

hi micki,

you can get stool softeners that have a laxative in them; that helped a lot for me...or try citrucel or metamucil, or the ever popular MOM (milk of magnesia).

Hope this is just a temporary problem!! Did you tell your dr you passed out int he bathroom? THat can't be good!

better now

had to do the enema thing that day and "what a relief" now paranoid about (pooping) never want to feel that way again. mom brought me the citrucel, i upped the stool softners to x2 a day, eating either a few prunes or dates and tried the apple sauce with 1Tblsp of mineral oil in the Am (got on this site) along with trying to get as much fiber in regular diet, ie. fresh vegies or spinach (all this in a day) seems to be working. (you'd think id have the runs??) nope! still a challenge to go but im GOING never had a problem in the past in this department. im a fruit and veggie kinda person (not much meat in my diet) This is a whole new challenge for me, and challenge it is. (ps. making bran muffins w/raisins today

can't seem to empty my bladder completely

Hi all,
Good to read the posts. This is my first, so I hope I am following form properly. I had my surgery on March 10, total abdominal hysterectomy (don't know the abbreviatiations yet!). I, too, have had trouble uriniating. I had to be straight cathed twice in the hospital as I couldn't go after they removed the catheter. I now just dribble. I KNOW that I have a full bladder, but when i do finally get the urge to pee, not much comes out. I am hoping it is just the swelling in the area. I am aware that if this keeps up, I may have to go in for another straight cath soon. <UGH> So, I my question for those who have experienced this, do you recall how long it took for your urges and ability to urinate to return to normal? I would appreciate any posts on this subject. Thanks so much. Glad someone directed me to this site.
Jennifer
