Vitamin C pre-o?

Hi-
My doctor said a multivitamin was fine the 2 weeks before surgery. But someone on another thread said that vitamin C can thin your blood and increase bleeding. This time of year, I usually take emergenc-C to prevent colds (it works wonders for me!), and I wanted to keep taking it so I don't get a cold just before surgery. Now I wonder if it's safe. I know I should call my doctor, but has anyone else heard that vitamin C is a bad idea before surgery? Emergenc-C has the same amount as most supplemental Cs--500 mg.
Thanks!

Vitamin C pre-o?

I just had my pre-op this pas thursday and they said absolutely not allowed to take multivitamin, vitamin e or c because it can thin the blood and cause more bleeding. I hope that helped!!

To C or not to C

Hi -

Had my preop this past Weds., surgery is Tues. Nurse told me I could continue my multi-vitamin, my vitamin C's, and suggested taking Airborne as a preventative as I seem to be surrounded by sneezing, hacking, sniffling sick people everywhere I go!

Now I'm totally confused! :confuse:

Vitamin C pre-o?

You are doing the right thing by calling your doctor. I was allowed to take Vit C right up until the day before my surgery and I took 500mg because Iwas fighting a nasty cold. Every doc is different so I guess you will have to listen to yours.
Good luck with your surgery!!!

Vitamin C pre-o?

I was told to take Vitamin C for one week before, the week of and the week after surgery as it promotes healing. So how confusing is that?

Vitamin C pre-o?

Thanks-- Jery1, I'm glad to hear you say it's vitamin E they warned you against, not vitamin C. My doctor specifically said to avoid E because it's a blood thinner, but C really helps with wound healing, not to mention cold prevention, so I'd like to keep taking it if possible. I'll check with the doctor on Tuesday at my pre-op and try to remember to let you all know what he says.

Vitamin C pre-o?

Not a post about vitamins here but something interesting I read:
I just read in a magazine that eating sunflower seeds after surgery helps your body heal. I guess they have something in it that helps tissues heal. I am going to stock up. My dr told me not to take any vitamins the week before. (I go in wednesday) Hugs raymo
