cin111, microinvasive, hyst..now what

Hi,
Just had a hyst for cin111 that turned into microinvasive cervical cancer.
Feeling great actually but not sure what to do to now.
Dr. says once a year paps-is that the norm?
I'm a bit scared of that and wondering what most gals are doing. Been under dr's care and had clear margins after leeps and cone but it always comes back.
Thanks,
Bridge

Have you seen a gyn/oncologist? Initially the doc thought my cancer was microinvasive (unfortunately he was wrong) but they were still going to give me paps and check me every 3 months after treatment. Once a year paps are for women who haven't had cancer so I wouldn't think that is enough follow up after a cancer diagnosis even if it is microinvasive, it is still cancer!!!

Hi,I know that some great ladie's will be along soon to answer your question. It does seem like you should have more frequent pap's though,as there is the chance that you could have CIN develop on the vaginal wall's.That way,you will catch anything that may show up early on.I would want to be checked more often myself.I also have CIN III and am having treatment next week. Take care.

That was similar to my situation--hyst for recurrent HGSIL; turned out I had microinvasive cervical cancer. I also had focal lymphovascular involvement, but lymph nodes turned out clear.
However, my gyn/onc had me on a regimen of paps every 3 mos for a year, then every four months, then if all was clear, once a year. I was very comfortable with close follow-up. My gyn/onc said close followup for the first two years was a given since if this was going to recur, it would likely do so in the first 24 months. After that, my risk dropped to that same as someone my age who hadn't had cancer, so once a year was sufficient.
Since you mention you have had CINIII return in the past after LEEPs and cone, I'd think you might want to err on the side of caution at least for a while....is the doctor who suggested yearly paps a gyn/oncologist? If not, you might want a second opinion. If so, you might want to ask why she didn't recommend more frequent paps. I guess that's where I'd start--with a chat with your doc. But if the thought of once-yearly paps makes you feel even a bit scared, I'd say go in more frequently, for peace of mind if nothing else.
Good luck!

I had TAH 3/14 for CIN 111/CIS which turned out to be microinvasive...no further Tx is required, but my MD wants to do paps every 4 months for the first year and then every 6 months the second year and if all is well annual paps from then on...he too says there is a slight chance that it could come back in the vaginal walls and that if it's going to, 2 years is the usual course it takes to develop. I would seek a second opinion if you aren't comfortable with your MD's decision.

Take care and God Bless!

cin111, microinvasive, hyst..now what

when I was "researching" (read: perseverating) on cervical cancer again (yes, I have issues) the other day, I came across the following FIGO guidelines for gynecological cancers. The web address is:

http://www.figo.org/content/PDF/staging-booklet.pdf

According to FIGO guidelines, follow up for Stage 1a1 and 1a2 (aka microinvasion), should be mainly by pap smears and should be annually after two normal smears at 4 months and 10 months.

There seems to be lots of variation in the follow up process, I have been told I can return to my family doctor if this pap (6 months after hysterectomy) comes back normal. I was also told to go every six months for about two years, then annually. I believe that some recommendations will tell you that after two years of normal smears that you can discontinue smears altogether. I will personally continue with my smears and exam, as many women I have met through support groups similar to this have had recurrence many years after their original cervical cancer dx and treatment.

I hope this helps a little.

hi and thanks to all. I did have an gyn/onc briefly but her hosp cancelled contract with my ins. company- after a biospy! She suggested monitoring because she was sure it would come back after hyst.
So went back to other doc and he says "once a year". I suppose I could go to another doc for paps..think I may after speaking with my dr in a few weeks.
To the gal who asked if I'm sore- No way at all. I felt from about day 3 back to normal. I have only tiny incision marks and they are only mildly annoying when I'm wearing jeans that button at the belly button zone. Cannot say enough good things about the laproscope. It's amazing the difference in recovery...not sore or exhausted as I was after myo for months.
Sorry to anwer all of you in one swop but my wireless is very low today.
My best wishes to your sister who's going for a colp. I actually like those because it's the only time my doc is talkative. I hope she does well and needs no serious treatment.
Thanks to all for the sharing of info... Much thanks

Bridge
PS- anyone who's a candidate for the laproscopic hyst should really consider it.
