don't laugh, but I have a ?

I think I know the answer, but wanted to ask anyway. The morning of the surgery - brushing my teeth - that probably isn't allowed is it? I would think that would stimulate my digestive system, correct?

Its ok to brush your teeth just don't swallow any water. They do not want anything in your stomach so that you don't accidentally throw up and get stuff in your lungs when they put the breathing tube in. Hope this helps and Good Luck

Hi Missy Moo

You can brush your teeth, just be sure spit out the toothpaste after, and no drink of water...

Ok, I was thinking that a small amount of water may trickle down my throat, and they wouldn't want that. The Dr never mentioned it, and I really felt silly asking, and didn't think of it until now! But wasn't sure. thank you!!

....and actually along with bein g told about not drinking water with my tooth brushing and doing any swallowing, both my Dr and anesthesiologist said I could take most of my morning medication and take sips of water....five pills.

It was ok for me to brush my teeth. In fact, the doctor had given me 2 pills for stomach acid to take the night prior to surgery and that morning so I was allowed to drink 2 oz. of water. I would not swallow any paste or drink anything if you werent instructed to take any medication that morning.
Good luck!

I brushed my teeth the morning of surgery and had DH bring my toothbrush and toothpaste into the preop room. Whenever my mouth was feeling dry and yucky I would brush. I also brushed just before they took me into the OR so I would be "nice and fresh". Just no swallowing of any toothpaste or water!

I brushed....just was careful not to swallow any of the paste. I did have a sip of water as I was instructed to take my heartburn medication.
If you are really concerned about it just call your docs office and rest assured...they've heard it all and no question is silly.
