Shoulder and Neck Pain from Gas,what can you do about it

Hi everybody! I have read that a lot of women get shoulder/neck pain from the gas that they introduce into your body. Is there anything one can do to relieve this pain, can the nurses give you something? Thank's for your answer's! Annette.

Unfortunately there isn't too much you can do for it. I have seen some people mention Mylicon, or Gas X, but when they are adding the Co2 gas to expand your belly it just has to get absorbed. Walking does help, and also try not to sit bolt upright. As gas goes to the highest point. I will tell you that this time around I had alot of neck, and back pain. At first I thought maybe they cranked on my neck too much putting the tube in, but my Dh works in the OR and talked with some of the people on Monday, and they said that it was probably from the gas. My surgery took 1-1/2 hours so I was insufflated a lot longer than I have ever been during a Laparoscopy. It subsided by Sunday evening, and I never felt the need to take pain pills. DH did rub my neck and back (which was about as hard as cement!) and I used one of those homedics back massagers (the chair shaped one)and that gave me some relief.
Good luck to you, If you are like me, you will immediately be glad you did this. I felt 1000 times better when I got out of the OR then when I went in

When I was at my pre-op assessment, the nurse indicated I'd have warm blankets over my neck and shoulders to help alleviate the gas. It's been a while since my last laparscopic procedure, but seem to remember getting some relief from a heating pad.

The gas really didn't cause me any problems, and this is why: the hospital gave me a gas pill with every meal (don't know what kind it was), and I was ordered to get up and walk the day after my surgery, which really and truly does relieve the gas. So when they tell you to walk, even if you are in pain and feel like you can't, do it anyway. I also learned on this site that if you are having gas pains, lie on your left side flat on the bed and this is the best position for passing gas. Honestly I just have not had a big problem with it.

Shoulder and Neck Pain from Gas,what can you do about it

Hi again,

There's two kinds of gas we seem to be discussing in this thread. It's my understanding that during laparoscopic surgery, the doctor pumps up your abdomen with CO2 gas in order to get a better view of things. This gas does not enter the digestive track and can't be passed in the traditional way (or treated with medications). Since it is lighter than air it travels upwards, and 'dissolves' out through the shoulders.

I suspect that digestive gases happen because of what your digestive track goes through before and during any surgery. Someone please correct me if I'm wrong.

Cheers,

Even though I did not have laparoscopic surgery, I did have that shoulder pain afterwards, it was really worse than the pain from my incision. I just took my pain meds on schedule, and after a couple of days walking around, it went away. It was a nuisance, not too bad.

I think Karen is right about the 2 different types of gas. I got gas pains quite badly after other procedures. The main things that helped me were walking, warm towels/wheat bags and peppermint cordial. Hope this helps! (It's def what I'll be doing again!)

I had a TAH, so the only gas I suffered from was intestinal. However, a friend of mine's hysterectomy was done lapriscopically and she was pumped full of gas - to enlarge their working area so they can see what they're doing, I guess?? Anyway, she found some relief from neck/shoulder pain with Asprecreme. Just fyi!

I found that the first time I got up to go to the bathroom the shoulder/neck pain from the gas was AWFUL, but everytime after that it got better. Lying down helped a lot; it really was the worst when I was walking. It was gone in a couple of days.
