sub-total vs total abd hyst

Hi, I am new to the site and due to have a TAH end of June. I have been advised to get rid of my cervix (no pathology and no family history of cancer) and some friends who have had TAH say it makes no or very little difference to their sexual response/orgasm. I have found, after some pleasurable "homework/reseach" that half the time my orgasms are clitoral/vaginal, and half the time they go all the up to the cervix. I am confused.
Won't that change anyway even if I keep my cervix cause the uterus will be gone?
Would appreciate hearing from others experiences in this matter....it is such a final decision...I want to make the right one for me.

Hi Susu,

Here is a link to our Keep Cervix? article which you may be interested in reading. It may answer your question for you.

Have you gotten opinions from another Dr or 2? It is always wise before making a decision about major surgery to get an opinion from more than one Dr. That way, you can also be more confident that the decision you make will be the best one for you.

Kay

I thought mine had to do with my cervix, but now that I do not have one I can happily say that what I thought was cervical must have been vaginal. I have the VERY same feelings up into my vagina that I had before my TAH. In fact now that my badly retroflexed/retroverted uterus is gone and there is no cervix to bump into (which would sometimes take my head off!), my "O's" come faster and stronger than before.

Hi Susu,

I kept my cervix also. In pre-op, my Dr. told me he felt the cervix helps with pelvic support and with sex. I am 2 yrs. post op now and I can notice a difference with keeping my cervix.

Wendy mentioned getting your cervix cauterized if you choose to keep it. Good point. I had my cervix cauterized during my hyst and I have not had a mini-period in post-op. If a Hyster Sister keeps one or both ovaries and the cervix, there is a chance of a mini-period.

Best wishes,

Mary

Thanks Ladies, I really appreciate the response...lots of food for thought both ways. I have made an appointment for a 2nd opinion. I welcome any more insights. It's good to hear that orgasms don't disappear when your uterus does!

Cheers

Susu
