Hi: I'm now 6 days post TAH and Besides having the terrible gas pains and cannot get proper sleep pattern going.......... now I have this terrible tickle in my throat, not all the time, but suddenly it will come on. It hurts sooooooo much to cough. I am holding myself down there as much as possible, but it still really hurts. Of course you can't really cough properly because you are protecting yourself, so what would take one or two coughs to clear is taking much much more...... my tummy is really sore now. I am sucking lozenges as soon as the feeling comes on........ any other secrets. Really takes a lot out of me after I settle down.

I'm frustrated and these gas pains are really bad. I will look into getting a gas aid tomorrow.

Thanks sisters

For the cough, what about trying hot tea or hot water with honey and lemon. Sometimes that helps me. Sometimes gargling with hot salt water helps too. What a terrible time to have a cough !

On the gas front, get Gas-X or another gas type product and start taking it asap. Also, avoid any gassy foods -- eat bland and that should help. My gas lasted about a week and was terrible only for a few days. It is very uncomfortable but the gas medicine does help.

Hang in there and feel better.

battling the cough

Hi Catherine,
A cough in addition to the gas pain and insomnia must be a tough ordeal. My surgery was the week before yours and I did all I could to avoid a cold. In spite of that, I still managed to get a tickle now and then, and boy it kills to cough! I try to keep a bottle of water with me all the time and keep lifesavers in all my pockets.Last week I was watching an old Seinfeld rerun and it even hurt when I laughed. My daughter said we better turn off the TV!
At 2 weeks post op, I must say the pain is slowly subsiding, and lessening with each and every day.
Take care, and try to take little walks around the house to help ease the gas pains. As far as the insomnia goes, I hear you. I am a "stomach sleeper" and haven't been able to sleep that way since before surgery. As a result, I am awake every 3 hours, tossing and turning. Oh well, guess I'll just have to deal and take naps when I can!

Wishing you a great recovery!

Please keep an eye on that cough! If you start to notice any other symptoms of a cold or if it does not go away in a day or two, please call the doctor so he can prescribe something safe for you to take. It may seem trivial, but you do not want to end up with pneumonia. In the meantime, rest lots, keep warm, and drink plenty of fluids to loosen any phlegm/secretions you may have.

Take Care

I too had a bad tickle in my throat at about 5 or 6 days that made me cough and it hurt so much. I sent my DH to the drug store at 10:00 at night to get some Robitussin Honey Cough cough syrup. It lasted for 8 hours and although it tasted sort of bad, it really got rid of my cough. I was off of pain meds by then, so if you are still taking them, you might want to ask your doctor if it would be alright to use a cough syrup. The Honey Cough really did the trick for me. Once I got rid of the tickle for a couple of days, it didn't seem to come back. I think it had something to do with my throat being irritated during surgery, from the breathing tube. Hope you get feeling better soon.
