Bladder Spasms
I'm at 2 weeks 6 days post/op. For the most part, pain-wise, my recovery has been great. Only needed tylenol/ibuprofin for pain control.
Last night, I was up all night with intense bladder/urethra spasms. I've never experienced these before. Back to using the heavy pain meds.
What causes these spasms? I had lots of bladder/vag repair. Is this just part of the recovery process? Did I do too much yesterday? DH thinks I need to do more to stretch and exercise those areas. I guess he's tired of pampering me.
Anyone else had this experience?

You may want to check with your doc. I had bladder repair and am also experiencing bladder spasms. The Urologist said a spasm occurs when the bladder clamps down. I'm paying attention to how often I'm voiding along with color. If your urine is cloudly or really dark, you'll want to be tested to make sure you don't have a UTI. Make sure you're drinking lots of water. Hope it gets better soon!

Bladder Spasms
I had bladder spasms when I would urinate. I also thought I had a UTI until my DR said is was normal because I had an intense surgery and things were disrupted. DR said over time it would subside then go away. I am now 8 weeks post and the spasms are light but not totally gone.

For starters you need to rule out a UTI.
Meanwhile, you can purchase some OTC Pyridium, sold under the name AZO Standard. This can be found at your local Walmart.
good luck

Thanks for that OTC info. I didn't know. Called dr office and they called in an Rx for Urispas. Nobody in the city has it until tomorrow.
Wish somebody at the pharmacy had told me that.

Bladder Spasms
Hi alysacs,
I'm sorry you're having the spasms. The others have given you good input here. I just want to comment on the stretching your dh has recommended It is too early for that kind of thing. You could cause tears in healing tissue that could cause adhesions. Two week is still very early. Tell him he isn't off the hook yet
I hope you feel better soon.

Bladder Spasms
Yes, I've been having the spasms as well, and I think when I was right around the second week (where you're at) that I really started noticing them. I would feel like a 'blown-up balloon ready to pop' type of feeling when I was resting, and then when I'd go only a little would come out, it would start cramping up at the end and then no more would come out - until I stood up and started to walk out! There was no burning at all, though, so I didn't think it could be a UTI. I talked to my doctor about it, and in my case it was because my uterus was completely adhered to my bladder (looked like one big organ covered with scar tissue, according to my doc) and they had to do a lot of work to get it detached. Our bladders have been through trauma and it's going to take a while for them to settle down and heal. It would be a good idea to ask your doctor about a urine culture to rule out a UTI though, just in case. I'm at 5 weeks and it's slowly but surely subsiding. Diana, thanks for the tip on the Pyridium, too - I had chronic bladder infections as a kid so that was prescribed for me then; I had no idea you could get it OTC now! It's great for the bladder spasms as it helps the bladder relax. Good luck, and hope you're feeling better soon!
